Deathmatch was "closed" to prevent people from farming.
A better soloution. Make a non-point map rotation. If people want it, let them choose it.
They won't get experience or points. But I bet you they'll have fun duelling and exploring.
Free to explore and test. No points or xp. Just fun!

Let's face it, why not bastardize something that is already well established and add a Hawken spin.

For environments, look no further than those from Star Wars, which cover most extreme Earth-like environments.
For FPS playability, the Battlefield maps are awesome. Personally, I'd love to see a Battlefield:BC2:Heavy Metal/Atacama Desert type of environment where Sharpshooters can do some serious damage in open space...maybe some kind of aerial mech-deployment vehicles or armoured mech APCs to help navigate the more open sections. I'm getting really tired of all the claustrophobic slugfest maps.

or how about using the unreal engine to pay homage to Deck16, Morpheus and Facing Worlds. There's a reason everybody loves these maps. or Halo's Blood Gulch or de_dust2 in Counterstrike_ BF:BC2 Laguna Presa Jungle/Swamp Map or Africa Harbor_

Give me a big map with possibilities for CQC and long-range snipin`. It would be a destroyed city with half of it covered in Hawken-Virus, the rest should simply be destroyed. Make it so the Predator and Infiltrator goes 95% invisible in many areas except for a big area in the middle where there is hot steam that shows them.

Use this as inspiration.

more team designed maps less DM maps. the city maps is what got me hooked. more light the better. atleast make 1 base vs base map thats how halo got so big. without blood gultch the game wouldnt be the same. im not saying make it that small but the same concept. a map with a littlebit of water is always nice, nothing to foresty but somthing like city/forest is always a nice touch. (with a little bit of water).

Unreal Tournament(99) has maps that would fit like a glove in this game

I'm wary of the spaceship/subterrainian map ideas because aside from hangers and maintenance bays most such interior spaces would logically be human sized rather than giant mech sized. I've played other mech games with maps that forget/ignore this, and I always find myself expecting to bump into Zentraedi crewmen. It's pretty, but it always feels noticably wrong.

There are a lot of really great ideas in this thread though.
