I always give the same advice to new people;

"Don't boost everywhere... only when needed!"

Edit / PS: Same goes for shooting as well...

Along the same lines, another big nono is hovering in the middle of a fight (it makes you an easy target). Boosting off the ground should really only be used for getting up somewhere higher for the most part.

Welcome to Hawken, pilot! :D

Keep one eye on your map at all times. You never know when someone's gonna show up behind you and blast you to kingdom come. Also! Be careful with your shots, since overheat takes over pretty quick.

Welcome to the power-fueled, post-apocalyptic world of Hawken. =)
Even the strongest mecha rust away with time, but that doesn't mean they can't fight.

Watch your overheat. Det your shots if you miss. Never stand still.

How close is Hawken to any of the Mechwarrior games_ Seems quite similar, albeit with differences in the important places.

Hawken is fast paced arcade, and Mechwarrior is more simulator.

And don't hover all the time. For god's sake. Use your boost, dodge, 180s and above all.. your BRAIN. Good luck and have fun! =)

Also, check out Moves Like Mech Jagger as well as wolfyftw's other videos. His videos are really enlightening on strategic maneuvers.

Peace.

Hi, and welcome to Hawken! :D

Four quick tips that everyone needs to know (some of these are covered in this thread):

1) Exp is granted by damage dealt (including assists), not kills. The scoreboard is ranked by exp, not kills. Killstealing is essentially a non-issue in Hawken unless two people finish the round with EXACTLY the same exp and something is needed for a tie-breaker. Keep all this in mind. There's also an exp bonus for staying alive instead of senselessly dying constantly, and there are exp bonuses for revenge kills, double kills, etc.

2) You can detonate explosive secondary weapons (well, the TOW and the GL, but not the Hellfires) after firing by right-clicking again. The TOW in particular can airburst and kill even if you don't get a direct hit. Your secondary is usually your more powerful weapon, so you shouldn't ignore it when trying to kill people with your primary.

3) Hawken is a game of agility. Your mech is amazingly agile when you know how to pilot it right. Shift+a/d are side dashes (left and right, respectively) and are essential for staying alive. Shift+s is, however, a fast 180-degree spin since Hawken has a maximum turning speed, and the spin is a lot faster than slooowly pulling all the way around through the arc if you're getting shot at in the back. You're probably going to die with your butt showing a few times until you get the hang of using this key combo only when you want to.

4) It's fun, but resist the urge to fly everywhere in combat. Lifting up off the ground means you can't dodge left and right anymore, and this will probably get you killed if you're not careful or lucky. There are legitimate tactical reasons to fly, especially when someone is chasing you around a corner and you decide to go for a "death from above" situation instead of staying on the ground, but usually hopping into the air in close combat is a sign that you actually would like to die now. Also, using your jet booster lights you up on everyone's radar for a pretty significant range, so flying lets everyone know where you are.
