I was in the middle of working on something, with MANY windows open.  The install just rebooted my computer with NO WARNING AT ALL, no option to postpone reboot etc.

Very very annoying.

I didn't get a forced reboot either. I was installing it while playing another game and having some windows open. I agree it must have been another program or a strange thing.

I've downloaded the game, and patched it, didn't restart my computer. Something else on your computer caused it, maybe a windows update_

It installed some windows prereq stuff, I suspect thats what caused the reboot.   There was some blueish background screen when it happened.   Ohh, am running win 8 beta.

If it needs to install the bundled prerequisite software it does do a forced reboot without asking permission, instantly closing all other open windows without warning.

I too found it shocking.

Hmmmm, on my pc it installed all the prerequisite software without the need for a reboot.

Are you sure it was the Hawken installer and not some other software_

Same thing happened to me. I was out of the room at the time and came back to a restarted machine. Took me a bit to figure out what happened.

I was also force restarted. Specifically on the restart, it instantly installed some AMD CPU drivers, and Microsoft .net framework version 4 before it even let me see my desktop. It was like a BIOS menu, low resolution, compressed logos and everything.

Had PTSD from my days in windows 95.

I saw pretty much the exact same processes that Lord_Maron described when I installed Hawken on Friday. It's certainly possible that the setup isn't directly responsible, and blame could lie with the AMD and/or .NET Framework installs; however, it wouldn't be particularly difficult to include some sort of "may require reboot" notification with the Hawken install.
