They borrowed it from an H.G. Wells novel_ Or is that just a reference_ After all, Cavorite was an alloy, not a mineral.

Wait, seriously_

H.G. Wells' anti-gravity metal_

That's what makes my repair drone float_

Yup, along with being built into the chassis of the mechs themselves to make them light enough to be as maneuverable as they are.

Technically, it's a synthetic cavorite material, since the natural cavorite is limited in supply.  The fighting in Hawken (the game) is actually over a fuel source called vitroleum that comes from processing rat f.e.c.e.s after the rats eat part of the giga-structure (no joke).  This is why (in theory) neither Prosk nor Sentium want to eliminate the giga-structure and are fighting to control infected territory.  The United Nations equivalent is keeping the planet on lockdown but is unofficially allowing export of vitroleum which in turn is making Prosk and Sentium filthy rich.

Regarding the pilots, we are all supposedly fighting for our corporate entities (Prosk / Sentium), because the corporations are glorifying pilots as heroes.  Good job, buddy!  You're on the news!

That last part feels a little half-baked, since we are arbitrarily assigned to Prosk or Sentium during matches...

Edit: The language filter fuzzy bunnied the word "f.e.c.e.s"... really_

It's also what makes the mechs so fast, able to stand up under their own weight and jump/dodge (with the assistance of thrusters - note that earlier mechs in the comics did not even need locomotive assistance!)

I would assume it is an in-universe reference. I imagine that the people of Illal discovered a mineral that had anti-gravity properties, so they named it after the metal with similar properties that H.G. Wells came up with.

The Blame! manga series (by Tsutomu Nihei) takes place in a world where layers upon layers of architectural structure have overgrown earth and even engulfed part of the moon. In the manga this is called the "Megastructure".
That alone wouldn't say much, but if you know the manga you will immediately recognise where the devs take their inspiration for the Hawken level-design from.
In the manga series it is revealed at some point that the Megastructure was built by misguided robots.

Just look at Coruscant in star wars....a planet covered entirely in many levels of city-scape.

If anyone's still wondering, BTW, a rebreather is a real thing, not sci-fi. You can look it up on Wikipedia.

I always wondered why mechs can be repaired quickly (I play a brawler, and it is said they are almost impossible to repair), have self-refilling yet very small fuel tanks (you deplete them in seconds, but they refill themselves... it must not be just a supply of vitroleum, because that way you wouldn't need to wait for fuel regeneration), and why the can respawn with an endless supply. And why they never run out of ammo_

One reason might be linked to the giga structure. It's a self regenerating material, and can be converted into vitroleum.

What if mechs we are in are made of giga structure_

I mean, base mech texture actually looks like the texture in origin. Hell, the Brawler looks like a big chunk of giga stucture.

Think about it: in the comics, you see that fight with cavorite mechs were extremely violent, and many pilots died due to mech-on-mech combat or air strikes. It wouldn't be easy to make such a war keep on going. Too expensive to train pilots that won't last much. Nothing says those mechs are the same as the ones we are using now.

Another problem is the fact that pilots don't die. This is a trickier one, but we know that the Hawken virus can infect humans too. It usally kills them in due time. But what if Sentium and Prosk managed to stabilize the condition of infected people, and giga structure "learned" how to recreate the human components it has infected_

That would make an excellent pilot: he won't die, he will have a chance to learn from his mistakes and, most importantly, will be partially made of the same stuff the thing he is driving is made of. It would probably let him control the mech as if it was a part of his own body.

And you have much less trouble when your employees can't die.

We might be some sort of cyberpunk zombies.XD
