Those are lugs to keep the hood from flying up while the car is racing and allow easy access to the engine is my understanding (partially) replacing the traditional hood-release as the only mechanism for access.

Tons of idiots put these on their cars even though they have no intent to ever race because they think it looks cool

Many similar folks love putting large spoilers on the backs of FWD cars as well...there's no explanation other than they think that that and decals add horsepower

I think it would be great to be able to have an all white mech for snow maps and all black mechs for night maps. If or when they come. I think it would add a whole new dynamic to the game. A nice solid olive drab or khaki would look good too.

The origion of the pins is that most aftermarket composite hoods have this because part tradition, part weight, part looks. I personally like them. And spoilers have distinct advantages to them, but unless you race, they just kill your gas mileage. Decals are dumb unless you have people that pay you to put them there.
