It's not going to happen. Devs have stated time and time again that they are not going to add them. It's also been asked about many times in the past.
Close combat would be a flak cannon or vulcan.
Besides, it doesn't fit in the game.
We have weapons that can damage and destroy other mechs from across the map. By the time you get close enough to use the thing, you are already at near destruction, and that assumes you even get close enough.

These are walker-type mechs and I've personally never seen any form of media where they've used melee weapons.

Anyways, we actually do have a melee attack in this game. It was recently buffed even. It's called "Crushing Damage" It's basically Goomba Stomping. You land on top of an fuzzy bunny and he takes damage. The damage varies depending on the weight class your playing (C's do the most damage, A's the least).
So yes, we do actually have a *sorta* melee attack
