Netcode has actually improved over the past few weeks, and I've not heard anyone else say that they're been having great problems since those upgrades rolled out.
Edit: The fact that you experience no problems with a better machine is also evidence for this.

I have a 4770, and it bottlenecks at around 6 players as well.
