I've been watching a lot of tutorials, even squeezed this thing out myself (sketched on photoshop, traced over in ink, filled in and modified color in a separate layer before adding shadows and highlights between the two.)

But things like lighting effects and creating more photo realistic pictures elude me. The above picture is my first usage of the program and tablet both, and that was just a few days ago so I haven't improved much. There are a couple issues in scaling at the moment (visor connects with helmet at the top/doesn't appear to actual cover the face hole, and the right side of the opening is much smaller than the left). Though to be fair, that's the way that the tutorial () did it.

Anything helps, as I do very much enjoy using this program and think mastering it has some level of career potential.

BTW, I picked up a Wacom Intuos5 Pro for it. ( http://www.amazon.co...0_ie=UTF8&psc=1 )

Well, my advice is silly, don't "draw" with Illustrator. Draw with Photoshop.

As far as my experience is concerned with both, illustrator is by far the superior program for creating finished products. Once it's done, photoshop is handy at editing individual instances of that product. Sketching is fine in photoshop because you can rotate the canvas on a whim, but that's about it.

That being said, I'm pretty sure you get the best results when you use both for one project.

This is a quickie from tonight:

I need to understand gradients better, for sure, and should spend some more time getting the shade layers correct, but at the moment I'm just practicing for the technicality of it.

illustrator is for vectors and photoshop is for raster painting/photo editing. If you need vector based image illustrator is better for that task.

Gracias, all. I will look at these when I get off work.
And zycon, $20 a month for everything is something I'm willing to pay for.
Probably wouldn't w/o student/faculty rate, but that seems pretty worth it.

I can vouch for lynda's student price, it's pretty reasonable for the amount of help that it can give you. sucker one of your student friends into helping you out if you can ;)  it really helped me get off the ground with the newest versions of adobe products and final cut X along with some other programs and camera lenses that I now use on an almost daily basis

linda.com trainings are very basic and boring ( at least the ones i saw on Ps AI C4d)
if you have some knowledge already i'd recommend to just start working and  youtube search whatever problems you will encounter,

That is nottttt me inw that video. Replicating that picture step by step took me probably six hours since its literally the first thing I've ever used either illustrator or my tablet for (intuous5 pro).
