Yeah, I've experienced this as well. (Onboard audio on a Gigabyte motherboard.) Could it have something to do with new sounds exceeding the maximum number of audio layers and abruptly taking priority over sounds that are still playing_

Most likely!

Yeah same here, it sounds like a geiger counter going off.... if this place was filled with radiation I could understand (and it'd be kinda cool)
Mess with the best, blow up like the rest >: )

I too have noticed this. The random popping (with audio working) seems to happen fairly regularly. On two occassions I've lost audio completely when loading into the game and hear nothing but a random pop/thud every once in a while. Returning to menu seemed to fix that problem.

I'm using on board Realtek audio.

Yes i have expieranced auido popping but the auido did not drop in the next game, nor did it continue.
Also this popping seemed to be happening with a fair amount of graphics tearing going on with some lag-
running HTOMEGA Haro-Claro card to a 5.1 reciever encoded to Dolby Digital Live over toslink,
Proc: Intel Core i7 3.4 GHZ - 16GB ram
GFX: GTX 680 FTW 1920 X cranked to max on everything

Thoughs_: my guess is latency is building up possibly a load balance issue between server events and auido out

Resolution -- 1920x1080
Fullscreen -- Off
VSync -- On
Borderless -- On
Texture quality -- Ultra
Graphics Quality -- Medium
---
Capped Smooth -- On
PhysX Particles -- Off
Motion Blur -- Off
Depth of Field -- Off
Post-Process MLAA - Off
Anisotropy -- 16x

No more Audio popping with above setting...

If I change Graphics Quality to High or Ultra... I get audio popping!

EDIT::  NEVERMIND... Turned up volume... still getting popping,.... ugghhh!!!

The only times I get a static popping sound is randomly when in the match lobby.  It seems like every time I hear that sound the next match will load with no audio. Restarting the game seems to be the only fix for me.

Onboard audio: Gigabye GA-Z68X-UD7-B3
There is no time like time wasted...
