I entered a game with 4 other people, when the game started the game was 5-on-5 though. The problem I had was that on the mini-map, it would show red circles for enemy mechs, but there were no enemies there. So basically it was just showing a bunch of random red dots.

This sounds like the radar scrambler, one of the newer functional items. It will place several false positives on the opposing teams radar.
