I actually thought of a work around, perhaps joining the lobby of a server_

Well, that'd certainly work, but it stops you from playing, and anyone who decides to randomly join that server will hear you guys.
People tend to use third-party solutions like TeamSpeak, Ventrilo/Mumble, or Skype, for chatting with friends across multiple servers.
