On the OPs stuff about positional damage. It's already done in plent of FPS and im not personally a big fan of it. Having to constantly be looking around like a deranged ferret just to prevent someone melee killing you, when you're just trying to get somewhere.
And there's no real reason why a mechs backside would be weaker to attacks. If anything the weak point on a mech would be the windows right_ Shooting the pilot.

This is quite annoying indeed.

Well, you can think of it like that all right but being aware of your surroundings is a part of being a good warrior. Blindly rushing into a battle is never a virtue in combat.

Actually there is, the same one that requires tank front armour to be thicker than sides' armour and side armour thicker than rear: armoured vehicle can carry only so much armour on it so the part that would be attacked most often(front) gets more armour than one that is shown to the enemy much rarer(rear).

As for OP idea, I'm all for as much realism and complexity in damage mechanics as possible, but, seeing how hawken is described in press releases, it feels that itwould be more of a "mech fps" than "mech sim", so I don't have high hopes for anything more than a couple of hitzones and random critical hits on low health.

The more detail, the better.
