You can get a pretty decent rig setup for as little as $600 - $700 USD and PC Gamer has pretty sweet guide on the topic: http://www.pcgamer.c...dget-gaming-pc/

That's a very-over-the-top gaming PC, probably geared towards heavy content creation and media editing.

For around $700 you can get a very capable gaming PC (provided you have a keyboard, mouse, monitor): that can handle pretty much anything around these days. If your son isn't doing anything fantastically exquisite with his computer (modeling, heavy media editing, heavy video rendering, etc) then you can build something that is more than capable of handling today's games with a decent framerate for years to come and even have a bit of growing space.

This is several months in the making, basically because it's 75% scrap metal.  Ideally I would be using VR for the video and a wireless headset for the audio.  The original plan even had it rotating too.  Here's the controller board rig I'm working on to operate a simple (but powerful) DC motor:

It'll take me a week to clean my station up enough to be picture presentable. Ah well.

In the mean time I'll just ogle everyone's setups.

Oh you have everything in Black & Red too ! Everyone knows that's the ultimate combo that beats everything and obviously that's all that matters.

Hi five.

Well, form is as important as function. My design philosophy is getting the most power for every dollar spent, and having everything match. This was achieved, however, the Keyboard is being replaced because they no longer make the sidewinder x4 so I'm going to store it as a back up and get the Das 4 Pro. It won't have LEDs, but it will still match.

Finally got my rig working.  I need a bigger TV for the full effect.  No updates on actual rotation, I probably won't implement it.
