I notice this option alot in most games, wether to enable v sync or not, and I'm not too sure what it does or if it will affect anything ingame or performance wise. I have read 50-50 reviews of some saying its good, some say its bad.

both sides debated tearing with it on and off, so I have no clue. someone want to elaborate it for me? or do any of you have it on?

If you are seeing screen tearing turn it on. Otherwise leave it off.

Vsync does technically throttle the gpu so ideally you would leave it off.

well I put my pc into performance mode, so barely anything is GPU related unless I run a game and even that doesnt take much power.

V-Sync synchronizes your monitor's refresh rate to your graphics card so you can get a more stable frame rate in increments of 30(30-60-90, ect.). Turning it off means your graphics card is no longer synced with your monitor and can get frame rates in between, which may or may not increase your frame rate(Such as having a graphics card capable of getting 40 fps but V-sync limits it to 30). It may also increase screen tearing, but if you're desperate for extra frames, its worth it.

This video does a better job explaining it than I could.

ok with that being said what if you have a NVIDIA GFX Card and a NVIDIA Sync type Monitor? would it increase FPS if both were optmized together with v sync? or naw?  I have a BenQ XL2411Z

Vsync, basically tells the gpu to wait for the monitor to send a "done drawing this frame, gonna start reading the Data for the next one" message. While ignoring this message, the gpu might start send data on the next frame while the monitor is still drawing the last frame, which leads to "tearing", a jagged line noting the difference in the data between two consecutive frames.

I like going against the best of any game I play. Helps you in the long run n motivates u to do more. Always room for improvement not failure

If your frame rate in game stays ABOVE 60FPS all the time Enable it.

If you get dips in game below 60FPS Disable it.

hoho don't listen to these nerdscrubs. it boils down to this. are you a bad? use v-bad. are you not a bad? don't use v-bad. I hope that cleared things up.

No one mentioned that v-sync on/off increases/decreases in-game latency. The amount of latency added will depend on the refresh rate of your monitor. Typing 'stat fps' in the game, and looking at the value in ms (below your FPS) will tell you the latency in-game.

Also worth noting is that a higher refresh rate monitor has the advantage of refreshing the display faster. So with v-sync off, the screen tearing is vastly reducedespecially when comparing against a 60Hz monitor.

It all depends on your setup.

Some random thread I found on the topic.

No. V-sync off almost always yields better performance on most games including hwk

the thing is, this game dips fps no matter how good your pc is lol. I can have maxed capped frames for 4 maps in a row then boom, it will go down too 50-70. So being poorly optimized its hard for me to tell if you need v sync or not. and I are not bad >:0! but its always been off for me.

If it is dipping to 50 shut Vsync off HoHo. Vsync is designed to maintain your frame rate at 60 FPS, unless the machine cannot maintain 60 in which case it often will default to 30FPS.

I have never seen it run below 140FPS on max settings. If you have more then one AMD card you can use Fifa 2014 Crossfire profile. Just change the config files to match Hawkens ini settings. Also open steam, right click on Hawken and choose run options, you have to force the game to run in DX9 by using -force -d3d9

im not even sure how to know the real framerates as "stat fps" and other tools report different rates than i know is actualy happening, some of m,y smoothest times was when it reports 90 frames from stat and it look sketchy when near 200 frames at other times. also input is affected by the rate like smoothing vsync and that  "wait for refresh" so many variables that no one method seems to be a permanent fix for me let alone to recommend others
