in public games, there are oftentimes better choices. the grenadier is nearly a strict upgrade and the brawler has more hp, a better secondary, and a range advantage.

 

in (the now defunct) competitive play, the vanguard fills a fairly important role. it's relatively speedy, has a good chunk of hp, and the miniflak is absolutely devastating in cqc. since competitive is missile assault, it's got a lot of opportunity to front line and make full use of it's high dps.

 

here's a relevant video from tpg season 3.

 

tl;dr: for your realistic usages, vanguard is outclassed.

using the "extractor" internal along with the "repair kit" internal, and the "repair charge" item is a meta known as orblord.  you basically stand/move near a health orb, and the internals allow you to heal faster and draw more health from them.  I prefer to call it orbwhore. this meta was prohibited in comp play.

the problem with this meta is that it entreats the pilot to a playstyle that is limiting: if you run orbwhore, you are anchored to orbs.  because of the min-max nature of competitive play, it was banned because it would have been the only viable build to remain competitive.  I would recommend only running it to see what it's about, and not limiting yourself to its one-dimensional play.

orbs are a central part of the turtle van strat.  Shut down parts of the map that way.

Never, never under any circumstances frontally engage a turreted vanguard.

For the smc vanguard:  shield1, orbs4, extr1,failsafe2,advfusor3.  this build should even get you through CoopBotDestruct no-deths on the first try.

Not to derail the discussion but I got Titanfall 2 and the first thing I noticed is that Tone's "dodge" sound sounds exactly like a Hawken mech dodging. Fun game
