I don't know about you, but maybe something like when the game was first released? I can barely remember but is that something you had in mind? I currently like the HUD as it is, especially the ability to change the colour

How about something like Titanfall's Titan Screens?
Instead of windows, screens that output feed from cameras outside the mech?

You can not disable parts of it, only the complete HUD with the togglevisor console command.
This HUD is actually quite minimalistic compared to the old one many of us loved.
take out the killed by crap that HL2:DM started
The first Half-Life had the same placement for those. Previous games usually showed it with the chat.
