Those are pretty bad reasons. Considering join in on the IRC would be entirely by choice, and as it's a community project, ADH wouldn't need to spend any time away from working on Hawken.

I'm beginning the channel registration process. If you are unfamiliar with IRC and using a software client, you can use the web-based one found here: http://webchat.quakenet.org/
Select your username and join the channel "#hawkenscrim" without the quotation marks. I require 3 more unique users in order to register the channel.
Please refer to the knowledgebase articles available on the quakenet site for more info on creating a permanent account if using your own client. (http://www.quakenet.org/help/general)

I selected quakenet due to its history, population and server availability. Esper appears to only have 5 servers, of which 1 is in the US, 4 are in Europe. Additionally, I would imagine as time goes on people will begin to tag their respective teams, forcing a truncation of names with the addition of a tag.
Addendum: quakenet supports 15 characters in the name.

Supporting IPv6 on Esper is cool for the geek factor as well.
Nick length... I wasn't able to find a specific length, but I was able to connect to it and go into a channel with a nick of steel_killers-asianjoykiller (AJK, your name was the longest one that came to mind when I was testing this, I've no intention of trying to impersonate you )
I have no real stake in the network you choose nonsiccus, I just wanted to point out a few things that esper offers than quakenet doesn't (and for the record, I use both).

You can also use programs like X-Chat, mIRC, hexchat, etc. Whatever you prefer for IRC (I personally use X-Chat)
I'm not a big fan of using webclients, but they do work. Mibbit is another popular IRC web client you can use.

I was thinking that using a webclient would be the easiest introduction to IRC for people who are unfamiliar with a software client. I may put up a guide to setting up a basic software client at future date (or most likely link to one of the multitude already online elsewhere).
