I tend to let people decide my personal details for me. Age, sex, location, orientation, hobbies, color of undergarments, it's just more fun that way.

Strictly speaking, this isn't much better. I know HUGS suggested even breaks between the value ranges, but to get meaningful aggregate demographics, you have to determine what question you are asking first. For instance, if we wanted an idea of how much entertainment spending might be captured from our player base, we might actually break up the groups as:
< 25
25 - 34
35 - 54
55 - 65
This is because we know from previous marketing and economic studies in the US that the < 25 group historically spends the smallest amount of money on entertainment, while the 35 - 54 group historically spends the largest amount of money (2x any other group) on entertainment.
From a different perspective, if you wanted to find out what activities the game is competing with in terms of time, we might break up the groups as:
< 18
18 - 22
23 - 26
27 - 45
> 45
These age ranges reflect the (very generic) life stages of pre-adult, college/professional training, young professional, parenthood/professional, and post-parenthood/mature professional. Depending on which life stage your player base exists within, you can get a decent idea of what other products and services you are competing with for their time.
More often than not, the only reason to ever get evenly-spaced age demographics is for academic purposes or when you know absolutely nothing about your population.

I didn't realize there were so many old fogies here. Any old timer's drawn to Hawken by BattleTech/Mechwarrior tabletop or old school pc games_
