Eh, not so much. It's not impossible to recover from but it gives the enemy a large advantage.

I think for the most part it works well but, there are still select few cases where players get spawned near their team as the enemy pushes in or spawn behind teammates as they die to the enemy.

Generally a competitive title will not have CoD style TDM as its comp gamemode, so there's that. Not even CoD does it actually

If you want to stop people from frequently respawning and coming back, as well as negating any issues involving item cheese, why not a 1 spawn gamemode, or at least one with limited spawns_

Alternatively, spawns based on map sides, with those sides being X distance from objectives, is usually a good way of mitigating distance

Granted, the difference a fresh player is going to make on any respawn-allowing match is going to depend rather heavily on player speed, fight viability from spawn and ttk...

so add jetball/bombing run and you've solved a large portion of that
