I am now using the Assault with great fun, but I'm unsure what upgrades I should get to increase my fun.
I now use the next loadout:
Prime weapon: SMC
Item: Shield (mk3), HE Charge (mk1)
Internals: Extractor, Advanced Reconstructor, (small self damage thingie)
But basicly I'm a big noob, and would like your advice/sugestion how to improve the loadout and play on its strengths better.

Everything is useful in its own way. I always recommend trying different things to find out what works best for you. Because you will see a lot of people with a variety of loadouts doing good. Not everyone can utilize the same items and weapons as the next person.
As far as internals go, you're pretty good to go. The other option a lot of people like though is the Air Compressor, if you feel like dodging in mid-air. It's really up to you, since this game is designed to offer options for people's individual play styles, not picking "the best" power combos like other games have you do.

SMC is currently the best weapon for this mech (see numerous complaint threads)
Items: Shields aren't all that good anymore. Best bet would be scanner mk2 and repair charge mk2 or some other combination.
Internals: Personally I went with air compressor + extractor + basic fuel convertor but whatever works for you. I outfitted this mech when we still had control of the tuning so it's lost some of it's air dynamics since then.

is the prestige weapon (assault rifle) any good_ It is described as to have a better range...

It's the same weapon as the Recruit mech. It's good if you like longer ranged combat, but up close it has less DPS than a SMC or the Vulcan.

Air compressor- the assault has great air combat and needs this if you want to fight in the air.
deflectors- shooting an assualt that is side dodging and boosting gives you 20% less damage.
shock coil- air combat can be dangerous if you run out of fuel and fall. I forgot the name of the map but I fell 3stories and it took 120hp and killed me. Kill streak gone.
Haven't decided on my items yet but shields are good.
