I have a workaround for the metafile issue for us new guys. Don't run the game from the installer, instead...

• Open Windows Explorer
  
• Navigate to the the install folder (e.g. C:Program FilesGamesHawken in my case)
  
• Open the "InstalledHawkenFiles" sub-folder
  
• Run "HawkenLauncher.exe" manually & sign in

I'm now downloading the full client in anticipation of the servers opening.
