My team got beaten so badly this morning we were bottled up into our own base with the enemy long range mechs nailing anyone moving forward and the rest of the enemy team snapping up anyone who got past. It was brutal. At that point shooting the ship was the only option but couldn't save us.

Well - I did just buy an incinerator - I rescind all my earlier statements.
Shooting the ship is way easier than herding rookies away from shutdown EU stations to take the AA

I always shoot the ship while en route to the AA. I often only boost till im halfway there to save fuel for dueling. there's a good few seconds of opportunity for me to launch TOWs at the ship before I can start killing enemies.

I'm not sure that matters very much, with the way fuel regenerates. It's an exponential (or at least not linear) gain, so draining half your tank and waiting for it to completely fill is only slightly less time vs a full drain and complete fill, but if you use fuel or dodge while this happens then the speed is reset.
Honestly you could get to the aa faster on a single tank with bunny hopping or boost dodging, both are more efficient compared to normal movement.
