It could be implemented as an item of some sort. A seperated thruster with really limited fuel that u cant use it continuously.

But I do hate the backward turn initially, though I got use to it

I dont think it should be added.  It allows players an escape from entering bad situations.  It allows for defending players to run away even easier.  It makes little sense with the mech's current positioning on their thrusters.  180+boost requires some skill and works perfectly fine as an escape tool.
This.

I often mess up hitting shift+S while trying to do a myriad of other things in the heat of battle and would love to be able to double tap S to 180 and use shift for the other moves.  Or a dedicated key bind for the 180 turn

My thoughts exactly. Hitting S while in the heat of battle and expecting to back up but not realizing I still had shift held down got me killed many times because I did a 180 unexpectedly and lost track of what was going on. (And yes, I suck at Hawken.) Why not Q for quick-turn_

skills and tactics guys.  first of all, don't get into a position where you would need to reverse boost, be aware of your surroundings and if you should get killed in such a situation don't say "gee I wish I had a mechanic that would save me from this" instead say, "how can I keep myself from getting into such a situation next time".  As said before, being able to reverse dash would be too OP for certain weapon types allowing players to just reverse away while firing.

That said, you can get out of a situation by being good at controlling your mech.  Ever consider a 90 degree turn with your mouse and side dashing away from the situation_  Effectively it is the same as a reverse dash and takes a bit of skill to pull off which is far cooler than just dashing away.  If you aren't as good with that tactic, you can always reverse 180 spin, and then boost away.

How to backwards boost in Hawken:

Turn 90 degrees left, quick boost left, turn 90 degrees right
or
Turn 90 degrees right, quick boost right, turn 90 degrees left

Still, I'm advocating in favor of 90º sideturns and 180º air turns.

Boosting backwards could considerably decrease the performance of close/medium range weapons, IMHO.

180° turn don't make sense, give your back to the enemy to escape... You have 3 mech in your tail and  you need turn around, making you even more vulnerable.

boost backward give to you  an option to escape without lose sight of enemies

Backwards boost is just a way of unloading your Vulcan cannon in the guy's face while getting away from him.

If you are running away, you are running away.

Dodge sideways and fly over his head instead.

Which is exactly why it shouldn't be in
Maybe you should try not engaging 3 enemies while on your own_
