That said, you can get out of a situation by being good at controlling your mech. Ever consider a 90 degree turn with your mouse and side dashing away from the situation_ Effectively it is the same as a reverse dash and takes a bit of skill to pull off which is far cooler than just dashing away. If you aren't as good with that tactic, you can always reverse 180 spin, and then boost away.

Boosting backwards could considerably decrease the performance of close/medium range weapons, IMHO.
