Basically just self publish. Sell Hawken in both DVD case and digital download. Let Steam be one of the stores that sells it even with their cut (that is for advertising and large captive exposure). then you can sell the products and spin offs on your own web site and make distribution deals with Amazon, best buy et al.
Selling digital downloads and physical copies(DVD) are not mutually exclusive. This way you do not compromise on your products integrity and keep more control. And on FTP look how SHK is on Steam and can be tied in via Amazon. Or too really be indie look at WOT's and their Amazom tie ins without Steam! So you should be able too propose any business and distribution plan you desire.
