Mech Idea - The Boxer [aka The melee mech]

Everyone I've introduced to Hawken would like a melee weapons in Hawken however I understand even when Hawken does meleeish weapons they kind of act like guns so here is probably as melee a mech can get while still sticking with the hawken look. I'm not the greatest drawer but I had an interesting idea for a mech.

^^This is The Boxer a medium build mech that specializes in close combat. Armor and speed similar to to the bruiser. 

 

Weapons options 1.Flak Canon 2.Mini Flak Canon 3. Assault Rifle

 

secondary weapons Rocket Flail: A thick spiked ball propelled by rockets smashing into enemy mechs. It does a good amount of damage however it does not do explosive damage and is reeled in once it's is done fully unwinding.  Since it is a flail it requires the mech to get in close which shouldn't be to scary when your weapons work well in close range(flak canon).

 

Special ability. Turning this around in my head and I want to say the  damage absorb would be best fit for this mech however I don't want this to end up being a G2 Bruiser nd I had an Idea give it blitz instead.

 

tell me what you guys think and make changes to whatever think would make this a balanced yet different mech concept.OzYDWLb.jpg

Don't know if the new devs would be on board with this, but the previous owners were very much against melee in the Hawken universe, along side lasers.

except the robot noisy boy, hes still cool


  

What if we just give some bacon paint, some bacon holo-emotes and change Bunker from snow to bacon.

 

This way, everyone will be happy.

What you should really do, is replace your parts with bacon, so you can cook games and eat bacon

Obviously the wallpaper would be cooler if bacon was incorporated into it.

Fine, I'll be the contrarian here. I kinda like the idea of adding a melee attack to Hawken. This is mostly because I have had the urge - many times - to punch out annoying mechs who are up in my face. I sort of wish that all of the mechs had a basic melee attack (like the sword attack in Tribes), though obviously it would have to work a bit differently. Perhaps it could sacrifice some armor on a successful hit in order to prevent overuse, or only be available when your weapons are overheated. I'd rather have something like that than a dedicated melee mech.

 

However, it would be really awkward to land such an attack without implementing a third person mode, and I really don't think Hawken should go that route, either.

Honestly it would be pretty cool to see a melee mech, but you gotta realize that as a melee mech, you will be going against ranged mechs. The Boxer going against a skilled sniper would have no chance at all. As can just dash arpund and use their ToWs and continous primary suppression forcing The Boxer to either flee or fight hoping that you get the kill.

 

So if there were to be a melee mech, youd have to take into consideration its mechanics. how can you make a mech that will get in and out without being too OP to the point where you become a pack a punch assassin. I see a similarity between that and a Raider. When creating something such as a mech, you have to think not only of its aspects, but also of everything else. If this were an assassin mech, which mech would it have trouble going against? Which mechs would it be great to fight? Think of its strengths and weakness. This guy would destroy an A with a quick flak and a swing with its flail, but whats the radius on the flail? I know you said it doesnt have an explosive effect but maybe give it a minor one. Whats the time it takes for the flail to hit and whats the CD for its recharge? Given an explosive blast would be great in my opinion because say it takes .5s for the flail to hit once you click the mouse button and it takes 1.5s for the flail to coil back up. In that time the enemy mech could be 15 (in game) ft away from you and unleashing havoc on you. The enemy would have full health, if you missed, and so the fight would be leaning in favor of the enemy. Now with that minor explosion, even if you missed, the enemy wouldnt be rdy to come back with full force and full health. So the fight wouldnt be one sided and you can then either choose to go HAM or pull back if you slipped up.

If melee was a thing, HAWKEN would end up like Quake: Live. 

 

People just rush in with their gauntlet trying to get as much damage done as possible before somebody frags them with a RG.

The original vision of HAWKEN intentionally lacked melee weapons and I like it that way.

I see meele weapons in HAWKEN like "Pile Bunker" in Lost planet 2.  Basically its a very short range ranged weapon with high damage.  Nothing that will "Ruin HAWKEN univerce" .

 

On light mechs it will be too op though.  So its supposed to be a B-C class weapon (You kinda need weight to pierce stuff).  Would be fun to use on both "Raider" mechs...

This is almost exactly strikingly similar to the kind of weapon both Raider mechs already have, tho...

I don't know about having about a cqc-focused mech. I don't think there are melee-tanks in real life, there probably is a good reason for that, but i'm too bad at physics to know (wild guess: square-cube law?). that reason would probably apply to futuristic mechs, being bipedal combat vehicles, too.

Maybe physics- or militarysavvy posters know the reason.

 

I myself am working on a concept for a c-class mech with an melee attack, but the attack in question is the mech's ability and intentionally impractical as a main source of damage. The main point of that attack is to penetrate and instatntly destroy shields and barriers. Additionally this weapon (shoulder-mounted, massive piles with a special coating that disrupts shields/barriers) could also be launched as a devastating long range attack (but besides long 20s cooldown, it also generates MASSIVE ammounts of heat, like 40% of the bar).

I'll post that in its own thread when its done, rather than hijacking yours.

I don't think this image is...concurrent with Hawken's style....I think a melee mech would have something like a drill or a jackhammer...not a flail

Personally it can be done I'm sure, the mech would likely have to be a C type like the G2 raider since the G2 raider has one the lowest healths for C types, but I personally would like to see a B type melee mech, peripherally with a sword/lazer sword or pile driver that looks like a javelin.

This is why Armored Core is my go to mech game for these kinds of things. From Software isn't afaid to put melee weapons in a game based around guns to spice things up. One can only wish that someday hawken devs will look more at the idea as a whole, but that might be wishful thinking...

It is wishful thinking.

 

It's not a case of 'being afraid', it's a case of it not fitting in with the game and it's mechanics.

 

No offense intended, but if you want an armored core style game, go play armored core. :smile:
