I "notices" fan noise coming from my computer, I dowloaded a software to monitor the T and fan speed.

I checked it out the values while I was playing :

- max T 99C

- max fan speed "100%" (i.e. 5970rpm)

I've got an (old ?) GeForce GT 545 and I wonder I had to start learning to sing a requiem.

99 C is a high temp for most cards, some can run really hot with no problem but I don't know about that model.

The Hawken forum's a forum, but it's like the only one you get yelled at for using.

Nvidia 500 series ran very very hot, but my GTX 550 Ti is still going strong (runs regularly at 70+ degrees under load, peaking at 89 degrees before overheating and crashing). Probably all it needs is some dismantling and cleaning of dust and other gunk, and thermal paste application.

After a quick cleanup the peak temperature is still 99C but at least the fan makes less noise and run at 5600rpm.

"Overheat, overheat, overheat" duh! press F for coolant ?

Have you tried setting a custom fan curve with GPU software like MSI Afterburner? Sometimes ramping up the fan earlier in the temperature rise can prevent such high temperature peaks.  Have you tried reapplying thermal paste as well? That does require taking apart the graphics card though, and I'm not sure if you're willing to do so.  In addition, thermal paste, depending on the brand and type, it could take a while to cure.

You should try changing the thermal paste first. It's not that hard, it costs almost nothing and the effects can be huge.

It's not rare for old thermal paste to get all dried and cracked all over.

Time to get a new gfx card anyways, overheating or not.
750ti for Nvidia, maybe a 960/760 if you are feeling spendy.
Wait for the next series of AMD if you want their graphics cards.

I don't see why. If his card performs well enough for his needs and the fix is easy enough, he can keep the card and the money. And buy a better/cheaper card later when he actually needs it.

Thx for the advice, I'll buy some paste and try that. I stopped building my own hardware when I bought this HP computer because I don't have much time.

I had random fps, using stat unitgraph showed that my GPU had hard time, frame rate looked like shark teeth. It happened when GPU temperature reached its max value (around 99C)

I disassembled my graphic card and made a clean up (I didn't put up some new thermal paste thought), but it seems to work better. Played a few bot TDM to try that, monitoring both framerate and GPU temperature. I had a steady ~90fps and GPU temperature didn't exceed 77C

I hope this will be enough.

Make sure u dont have some kind of malware that uses your PC to dig bitcoins. Happend to me (no 99 degrees temp, but significant performance drop) about year ago.

Lol, I though we were talking about CPU and GPU today in the game... my apologies.

Ergo,

I've had a case like yours in the past with an older Nvidia GPU. Don't waste much time nor resources with in case you've revised and cleaned its fan, any other dirty which could be lowering cooling, et cetera...

These GPUs degrade and several malfunction end up occurring. My older GPU was having the same issue: Abnormal Overheating before finally dying or went kaput.

There are many options which are relatively cheap within the, for example, Nvidia 700 series. I'd suggest you something like the Geforce gtx 750Ti 2GB or higher. These aren't so expensive right now.

Seems to be that It's time to upgrade there at your end. Hope this is of any help for you, mate. ;)

Holly Crap, I spent 2 hours in computer beeps and googling stuff and it seems that msi GTX 750Ti is not compatible with my old HP h8-1141fr desktop computer (it seems to comes from the IPISB-CH2 motherboard from what I've read)

And now I dunno if I have been infected by a malware while reading tech forums but I also lost the settings of my windows session.... the only funny thing is the message in the event journal :

-- SECURITY WARNING -- Unable to deserialize super secret file hashes. Will assume evil is afoot - all Validate() calls will return DOESNT_MATCH
   at HP.ActiveHealth.Commons.Security.HashStore.LoadHashesFromFile()

I'd do a double check for malware stuff with HitManPro. You can do a free scan to take a look, and if you feel like it, activating the one time trial license to clean stuff out: http://www.surfright.nl/en/downloads/

Have you tried resetting RAM, reseating the CPU, reseating the CMOS battery? Sometimes weird fuzzy bunny like that works.

WTF!?!?

Let's analyze this new situation you're having here. And sorry to hear that, mate... -> If your mobo has the proper PCI-e port then the new GPU must be compatible. Check cautiously the settings of your BIOS and even post an screenshot only of what's related to the GPU settings on here, if you wish, before touching anything in your BIOS setup.

About the missing O.S' session settings and that warning msg you're seeing.. WTF?!? Clean your temporal folders and navigator cache ( download from www.piriform.com the CCleaner tool to do that ). Run a full scan with an updated antivirus and check for any malware as well.. (although I never used the tool the other guy has suggested you above)

You also may try goin back by restoring a system backup with an older date, previous to the issue you're having occurred..

Keep telling us how it is going and remember -> Cold head = Cool head. Luck with that!

I ran an avast analysis and it found some infected files, my session is now restored.

About my rig, my motherboard has a PCI-Express port, but the last version of the bios date from 2011 (I've uptaded it). After mys google search, I've found topics on HP support forum with people that had the same motherboard and were limited to 6xx generation.

The first thing you have to do is reading well your MOBO manual. If you do not have it at hand physically then you always can google  and download it from the official site of the manufacturer. If not you may have similar troubles after purchasing RAM, CPU, Etc without having checked the specs very well..

P.S. And thanks for the like, dude.. lol
