Today at 10:30pm EST, TPG teams Super Awesome Sparkle Cupcakes and Axe Attack will be playing a practice match. The event will be spectated by and sportscasted by none other than Kirkgonewild and TheButtSatisfier.

 

This event is a test of the viability/popularity of competitive Hawken sportscasting. Today is only a scrim between the two teams, but TPG intends to move on to stream real matches between all TPG participants. Come watch on TPG Hawken's Twitch channel and support!

The match just ended about 15 minutes ago. It felt GREAT to commentate for the first time! Kirk and I are excited to commentate the next match and apply some of the lessons we've learned.

 

If anyone is going to scrim coming up, Kirk and I would love to commentate it (schedules allowing). Let us know either in-game or in this thread and we'll see if we can join.

 

Also, we'd love you feedback on the streaming. We have a lot of room for improvement, so any constructive opinions would be welcome.

It's really too bad that we can't identify players, teams, or point ownership from the spectator's view.  I know a few teams have done this already, but maybe we should all standardize team colors for commentating purposes.

 

Is there any way to speed up the free-roam cam?  (Ashfire plz <3)

 

Edit: Regarding more feedback for Butt and Kirk and other potential commentators, a big part of shoutcasting in videogames especially is exciting the viewers.  I know many things at high tier play may not stick out as impressive to players of similar caliber, but you should still overhype the small things that are going on because there's simply too much time between truly amazing plays.  Simple things like direct secondary hits, or a well-timed dodge, or even backing up an ally to finish off a kill should seem awesome to the viewers, and it's your job to make it seem that way!

 

Personally I dislike when casters talk constantly, so you did well to space out the commentary.  I agree with the requests to not show the scoreboard during the match, except for maybe when whomever you're following dies so you can use the scoreboard as a placeholder while you switch to a new view.

I second this. Twitch for some reason loads REALLY slow for me. I just tried watching it, and I got 3 seconds before it needed to load. Then it did it again on 10 second mark then again. I gave up after a minute of waiting for only 30 seconds of footage.

Seriously though that turned out better than I expected. We just need to get some overlays drawn up so it can be a bit more professional looking.

Watched it over after the games were done, and despite the obvious technical issues and wrinkles of first-time testing it was very enjoyable. Really nice work, guys!

 

Another +1 to no scoreboard during the action since it can be disruptive, but one small suggestion I would make is to perhaps occasionally comment on which team is currently leading on points. I watched the second round while sitting out but the stream loaded in after things were already under way, and I got mixed up on team colours and thought that we (AA) were barely holding on to a lead throughout the match, and then the final scoreboard popped up and I was like, "Wait, we lost? "

 

So, yeah, just a quick mention every now and then of who's currently ahead could be beneficial to people dropping in mid-match.
