I did that as well. It had no impact

ALAS!!! The op of this modifications is pretty right - many of the lines have multiple instances in the "BaseEngine", "BackupDefaultEngine" and "HawkenEngine" configs in my documents and game folders!!! I guess, that's the same 4 every1, too.

The search function (STRG-5) is really essential 2 find and modify 'em all. Did u check 4 doubles and triples, dude? If there's the slightest chance, u might have overseen any, i suggest u re-check all files again. i didn't notice that the 1st time i edited the files. Especially the "MipFade..."-lines have 3 instances, showing the same values!

I don't know if it works as intendet after all changes r finally done, but it's remarkable how many others stated 2 have great improvements after following the instructons exactly, so i believe this could be a real solution - provided it's done flawless. I will try out soon, and report back then.

The OP did specify that the engine.ini is located in my documents. So I changed the HawkenEngine and the DefaultBackupEngine. But I also changed the one in the game folder just to be on the safe side. However I didn't find any doubles within the files itself.

Very weird... I found IE 9 instances of "MipFade..." lines al2gether (!!!), and at least 6 doubles of other lines in all 3 configs, and applied the same changes 2 'em... Even the 1 in the game folder, too. Did u make sure 2 search up AND down in the configs, via STRG-5, too? They figured in my lists with a lot of distance between 'em. I can't imagine y they double and triple in my files,  anyway, but it's just as the op mentioned. He also stated very clearly, that it only functions, when ALL instances have been changed 2 the values he specified - that makes sense. However, if u don't have any doubles, it wasn't ur fault. Strange, though. I understand, y VALUES in configs on different systems vary a lot, due 2 different hardware, chosen settings and all, but i don't catch y the STRUCTURE of the configs can differ so much. Kinda riddle...

All you really have to do is close any chrome browsers before you start up the game, no need for a full restart. Chrome is indeed the fastest browser and I use it myself but when I only had 4gb of RAM that's what I used to do. Close browser before launch.

Done. Thx 4 the tip.

Now 2 the config modifications: I played with pretty stable 60 - 70 fps, sometimes even better! Bit weird is, my fps in the main menu have lowered 2 120 again, while the ingame fps is far better now. Anyway. Whole gameplay feels much smoother now - even when heavy lag occurs, the situation is more controllable than b4. This is DEFINTELY a remarkable improvement, at least in my case, so i can recommend the config changes without any doubt 2 Radeon R9 users.

I vote the op 4 president asap!

Big thx 2 angryhampster 4 posting it here, too. Great job, dude!

I assume it's in relation to AMD CPUs because I don't have issues with my AMD GPU, never have, but I've heard of a lot of people who've had issues with AMD CPUs. Hawken has typically been more Intel friendly, where I could be pumping out better fps on a Sandy Bridge i3 versus an overclocked 8350.

Well, I'll try it and see what happens.  I read the thread over and the issue he describes sound exactly like how Hawken runs on my machine, "stat FPS" says the game is running at a high FPS but how the game feels is a different story.  I really think it has something to do with the Bulldozer and derivatives architecture and not so much a AMD thing as Ive seen Hawken run buttery smooth on Athlon X2 machines.

BTW - i'm using an Athlon II X4 640 (Quadcore ,4 x 3000 MHz) and only 4 GB RAM. Rainbow Sheep already convinced me, that it will b a damn good idea 2 get more RAM 2 improve overall performance, but what about a AMD PHENOM CPU, too??? If i am right, my mainboard also supports this CPU as maximum, but is it worthwile over the Athlon II i have, considering i get 1 with similar clock frequency?

Phenom II would be a decent upgrade if you can find one for cheap.  Probably 10-15% faster per clock and one of the 6 core CPUs would be fairly future proof if you plan on keeping it for awhile.  But yeah, going to 8GB is the best thing you can do.

Thx-a-lot, AxionOperandi. 10 - 15% faster sounds good 2 me. I'll improve my machine with CPU and RAM asap.

garpheus, I was able to recreate the stuttering and teleporting of a-classes you described.

I switched on vertical sync in Hawken as in the graphics card settings.

Here's the thing, I wasn't able to get rid of it afterwards.

I just had to reinstall from an older steam backup.

With the modifications the OP described I had screentearing, so vertical sync seemed to be the right thing.

Now that everything is back to normal (old install) no more screen tearing and I get my framerate back to where it was.

Hey, dude.

Many thx 4 tellin' me. I didn't get any screentearing, but meanwhile I activated vertical sync and a few other graphic options, i expected 2 be relatively "harmless" 2 tinker with, after i modded the configs. It turned out, that the performance lowered a bit, but i blamed it on the (still) terrible EU server performance, yesterday when i got very high ping spikes and also an overall higher ping mean value without a reason. Others complained about the same, too, so i didn't associate it with the v-sync. However - if i remember right, the performance got down after i reactivating v-sync again. This might be no coincidence. I'll check 4 it. Hope i can fix it without reinstalling HAWKEN. I'll report back.

It's definitely the servers.

I got crazy today checking my framerate.

Was all rubberbanding.

Confirmed - the servers, nothing else. You r right. I still get about 60 + fps, but it's freakin' laggy on every 2nd server - if not more. Teleports even on the Lagfurt COOP BOT TDM servers, although not so insanely bad as on the pvp TDM 1s. What an irony - fixed the worst GPU probs 2 my satisfaction just 2 end up helpless due 2 the problem of being forced 2 play on crappy servers against lag-abusing Scouts again. What a joke. Go 2 jail. Take the direct way. If you pass Start don't earn 4000 credits.
