You know... Since the game is called "hawken"
You would think there would be more info on what "hawken" is.
I heard it was a virus, a man made nano machine virus, that went completely ape shite in some long gone Area 51 kind of facility...from some various sources on the forums...

I understand that this should probably be in the art and media part of the forums...
But this is a discussion...What IS the hawken virus specifically?
And what does it do?

What kind of man made fabrication from God has the power to send EVERYONE inside and keep
them there... Has the power to only allow people to go out in 70 ton rocket propelled tanks...
Yet have NO AFFECT on nature?!?

The only thing that I can think of that could have a similar power would be a bio bomb...or chemical bomb... But that's not a nano machine...

My understanding is that it is essentially grey goo: a swarm of nanomachines that "fix" organic material and turn it into a metal gigastructure.

What Hyginos said - It is a Virus created by Crion Industries, which was accidentally released, destroying Crion in the process.

Hawken, the name, itself was apparently an inside joke (James Hawkins, the Senior Environmental Artist) when the game was in development and it didn't have a name yet, but it stuck so that's why the game is called Hawken.

The Hawken Virus is a self-replicating nano-virus released by the event which caused the collapse of Crion. It spread after things went south (a big explosion) in a Crion research facility in the middle of Crion territory. It is not known wether the virus went out of control at the facility or if Prosk or Sentium agents caused the event.

It definitely has an effect on nature. The large mass of self-replicating nano-machines is called Giga-Structure. It's visible as metallic patches (most likely due to a mechanical, nano-bot nature). The Giga-Structure covers approximately one-third of the planet's surface. While it's not harmful to mechs, immobile objects like buildings and highways, and even biological entities such as trees and cattle, have all been shown to be susceptible to the virus' spread. So, the virus destroys pretty much everything in order to gather materials to replicate itself.

Pretty much. Dr. Hawken never did find out how to make the damn buggers stop and control them. Then again, he was also killed in the blast.

The map Origin is supposed to depict an environment that has been overtaken by the nanovirus. It is apparently situated in Kobalt which is the former home of Crion solutions. The accident that is referred to above took place in the Praxis Valley in a Crion research facility called Typhus. Yes, Dr. James Hawken (supposedly) died in the blast. 
 
In #3 (I think) of the early Genesis preview comics (that did not make it into the final book), this man is found still living in the Praxis Valley. This is where the idea for KDR comes from.

Course what it actually does is very questionable...
It somehow kills people...but leaves nature alone...
Though people are saying it kills cows...and makes trees grey...

Yet prior knowledge of nano machines says they manipulate elements on a molecular level...
So if it kills humans, it should ruin carbon molecules...so that should be killing nature...or...eating up a lot of ground...

The concept behind the "grey goo" is that someone makes some nanomachines (son) that repair some non-nanomachine equipment, but when the nanomachines get on something other than the stuff they're supposed to repair they assume that its just a super broken version of what they were programed to repair and set to work making the thing look like the metal they were designed to fix. As a result they go ham trying to reorganize everything on a molecular level and thus is born the gigastructure.

If it selfreplicates, doesn't that make the hawken machines more like bacteria or something? virus implies that it has a host built new machines rather than build new machines itself. (also isn't NANO-virus redundant, since a virus' size is already in the nanometer range?)

how are the mechs safe if other non-biological structures aren't.

How does hawken turn everything into metal if its "food" is mostly organic or otherwise nonmetallic? can it change non-metal atoms into metal atoms? if so, WOW, that is a hell of feat, even in the far future. it's probably turning the planet itself (not just the surface) into nanomachines! where will it end?

do you have hiv, yourself, and think rozer is mocking your condition? that everyone who reads that is gonna treat hiv like non-issue now?

if you're not, do you humans act offended on the behalf of others (who could probably speak for themselves if they cared enough to do so) whenever some kind of "tragedy", be it illness, natural disaster, murder or other things like that, is brought up as a comparison to something else, as a joke or otherwise?

do you not think this behaviour to be rather patronizing?

what is the use of this behavior? why make rozer think it did something terrible when it didn't? i'm appearantly human, too (i certainly look like it and seem to have very similiar physiological needs), but "normal" human behaviors like this never made sense to me, no matter how often i see it.

If you don't understand why writing HIV in large red letters in answer to the question; What is the HAWKEN virus? Then I have nothing to contribute to your statement.

Members of KDR are expected to set a good example on the HAWKEN forum as each one is a representative of the clan. They should not engage in any activity on the forum that could be considered offensive to others.
 
I personally stand very firmly by this as do the majority of KDR members.

And now suddenly I'm told our axes are made out of floating rocks...
Is that supposed to tell me that our axes could go to space if we strapped on a ton of fuel tanks?

Nanomachines are just magic. Other humans seem to think that magic does not exist in science fiction, only in fantasy. But to me, magic just means "i can't explain how this works", something that can apply to sci-fi, too. I doubt that the devs (both current and previous) have a degree in robotics or physics or whatever else you need to actually make these nanomachines. but you don't need that to write about nanomachines.

all i'm asking for in fiction is internal consistency. in this case, what properties do the mechs have, that neither other man-made structures nor liveforms nor the landscape have? Can this property exist in other things? Can humans incorporate it into other things? Things like that.

I'm not to fond of magic/nanomachines being used as a way of saying "it just works" and than later come up with properties that completely contradict previous events.

As for the devs here, they should figure out how the game's code actually works before worrying about stuff like that.

Although an in-game explanation of the most basic aspects of the setting would be cool. You something like you would find in a game's instruction manual years ago.

Is not being in the clan so much of an inconvenience that you put up with that? I might be reading too much into this, but putting up with what somewhat sounds like a powertripper, just so you can socialize with a small circle of fellow players, seems too "serious business" for a group for game (which i think are meant to be fun). Socializing with other players outside of your "clan" on this forum could work, too.

you want me to "move along", because you expect (and don't want) a thread derailment, don't you? An understandable concern. Regrettably, my desire to understand other humans makes this difficult to stop by myself. Thinking about it, not responding to the off-topic portions of my posts should suffice.

I think i find that offensive, but i'm not sure, because rather than feeling pain or anger, i actually laughed.

Watching humans interact on the internet has shown me that humans, as a whole, are offended by pretty much everything. Some humans are even offended by being told they're wrong! Wanting to never offend anyone is doomed to fail.

Although, maybe you mean that you don't want to socialize with humans that do things specifically to offend/hurt someone. THAT i can agree with, and maybe then this was a misunderstanding or something.

As you can see the explosion is absorbed by the material and the floor melts slightly, then recovers itself. This doesn't happen with the rest of materials, such as normal concrete on the roads:

Helps? Probably. It would definitely contribute to the fact hawken is still around and dulling everything in the world...

But other than that, all it shows is its replicating abilities.

Favorite, a very light and durable metal was found. Sentium, PROSK, and Crion, but mostly Sentium and PROSK, decided to terriform and mine the planet. A gentleman by the name of James Hawken was convinced by his friend to leave Sentium and join PROSK where he developed nano cavorite, an even lighter and stronger version of cavorite. After a big messy spoiler free event he went to work for Crion, where he developed the Hawken "virus". It was a self replicating nano structure that was intended to repair Nano cavorite structures and machines. Unfortunately testing wasn't complete and another spoiler free event happened causing it's release. It is capable of turning organic material into another form of cavorite known as gigastructure.

I would like to say a few things on this and my own research, I'll spoiler it.

HAWKEN's virus - nanobots that were designed with an intent to make massive production and food sustainability infinitely possible using molecular and atomic recombination sequences. (Takes stuff and uses science to basically make alchemy real.) However, in the story I've written, the virus was never moved past it's initial control phases as no computer system cooks logically control so much of it at one time; enter Dr. Carnaghe, but I digress.

Giga-Structure - HAWKEN's virus uses biological compound due to their naturally faster rate of decay, but can, over time, also corrode metals. Most Giga-Structue (GS) is actually the virus extending itself across large, empty expanses in search of more'food'. Origin is a great example of that, as there are still segments of the road uncovered as the semi-sentient virus chooses not to expand in a direction with no food.

EU - As shown above, it's proclaimed as 'rat feces', though logically, that makes no sense. If ever rat on Illal were to eat the GS at a constant and increasing rate, they would not be able to produce as much EU necessary to move the large assault bases into position for MA and Siege matches. I am going to work with Hijinks on making a more plausible story with actual use of the above graphic strip.

Last-Eco - In HAWKEN, it is assumed that the virus has simply not reached the tree line yet, though again, that would make no sense with the new virus-mutated rats and natural creatures of Illal. I have another theory on that... But if course, it's all fan fiction at that level, so I'll leave it out.

The Health Orbs and Healing beam - as mentioned above, James's son did indeed discover the virus could be used to actual repair mechs, and Hijinks has a lovely description of that somewhere.
