This thread is ancient.  If you are going to edit the files directly, you should edit the ones under My Games, not the main ones in program files.

(I don't mean to necro threads, I'm just almost always running behind.  My apologies)

You don't need to follow any instructions here anymore, this is back when we didn't have a advanced graphics options tab.

In order to do the exact same thing in the current version of Hawken as of 5/9/13, you only need to select the "use custom graphics option" in the display settings, and turn off (uncleck) the items you no longer want.

Doing the above will do the exact same thing as editing the ini files.

Also, like Bacon said, only edit the ones in the my documents area.
