No, players should not be able to choose whether textures are displayed or not. This would allow a sizable advantage to anyone who turned them off.

That said, I think we should either have textureless maps in rotation or servers with textureless maps.
tis a good point.

"Deck the halls with Persian carpets."

Yeah if you look down at my sig...I can't vote otherwise.

(Non-Troll Vote: I'd be happy to play with non-textured maps.)

I'm against allowing players to select a textureless option. As others have said here, it gives an advantage to those players as mechs become highly visible against them. The Low setting for the textures makes quite a lot of areas quite blurry, to the point where some buildings in Uptown and Prosk end up looking like blocks of cheese against the other buildings around them.

That said, I wouldn't be against a map that just used grid-like textures, like a big training area. :)

Similar to this, but with more bacon:

Nope.  The bounding boxes are at least 50% larger by volume.  ...And invisible.  ...And OP.  ...And they are after you.  ...You, specifically.

eh quake has client side variables for turning textures on and off, the competitive community never had issue.  If you want the advantage turn them off.  If you want it to look pretty, keep them on.  Make it an option in the video settings so that it's not hidden.

It's sort of the same as playing on low vs high isn't it_

Please don't add this feature. It just opens a door for players to create color-based aimbots and even make wallhacking easier. Not to mention people who disables textures will have the upper hand at seeing other mechs more clearly in certain maps.

I agree with those points about lack of textures giving a competitive advantage, but cheaters can do that already with methods we should not mention, correct_

I may be living in the old CS days, but texture hacks seem pretty easy to do from what I hear. I don't bother with cheating, so I may be ignorant on this. Someone please address my earlier point that a-holes are probably already doing it. It seems to me like there is an elephant in the room, which is why I agree on principle with most of y'all, but practically speaking I am in favor of the bare maps as an option.

Bare maps might be cool, but it might end up ultimately messing with the game's look. So far, all the maps have a consistent world look; something out of place might throw it off.
