If given complete free reign, it would either be completely holographic or a very minimalist computer overlay (high contrast boxes without frills). My current mock-up was limited because I had to cover up the existing UI completely in order to keep the mech on the right and straddles the holographic and computer overlay looks (a bit more overlay-y).
My design would require reformatting many of the icons in order to get them easily readable, so a greater consistency could be achieved. I agree on the optimization buttons, they look very out of place with their colors and interaction. Click to increase, shift click to decrease with a plus or minus sign on top of the icon to show which effect will happen. The overall interaction with the current UI is very jumbled and confused. And the interface is just boring, verging on ugly.
And hendman, yes, the name is from catch-22. You catch comment went straight over my head, I thought it was something forums related!
