If given complete free reign, it would either be completely holographic or a very minimalist computer overlay (high contrast boxes without frills).  My current mock-up was limited because I had to cover up the existing UI completely in order to keep the mech on the right and straddles the holographic and computer overlay looks (a bit more overlay-y).

My design would require reformatting many of the icons in order to get them easily readable, so a greater consistency could be achieved.  I agree on the optimization buttons, they look very out of place with their colors and interaction.  Click to increase, shift click to decrease with a plus or minus sign on top of the icon to show which effect will happen.  The overall interaction with the current UI is very jumbled and confused.  And the interface is just boring, verging on ugly.

And hendman, yes, the name is from catch-22.  You catch comment went straight over my head, I thought it was something forums related!

Major_Major_Major (nice name)- I love it. Elegant and simple. Great work, sir.
Erathic- that is freaking beautiful. The holographic thing would totally work with the whole mech theme, and it looks like you can see the stats a lot easier than currently.

I'd also like the Mech UI to be bigger too... When more mechs come out having only one column will be annoying...

Love the design! I am a Web & Graphic Designer and minimalist but informative is the way I work! I really think that this should be implemented ASAP.

Guess what_  I made another mockup! B)

I took a hint from Erathic and tried for a more immersive design using one of the few UI elements in the game that I liked, the projected mech name.  And then used it and used it and used it.  Haven't added all the panels or tabs yet, but you get the idea.

The "equipping arrow" would stretch and bend depending on the location of the item in question.  Just to give it a bit more of an interactive feel and really make it show what it is effecting on your mech.  I'd like to have the internals be visible on the mech too, but then they wouldn't be so internal would they_  It would make each person's mech be more unique, even if just subtly.

Once more that damn dark grey color text. This is an oooold accessibility issue many have been suffering with since the first builds of the game. Why they do not use yellow or white to make that little text readable to everyone_

I know you're not officially in charge of that area. But I had to say this again.

Anyways.. That distribution looks cool but.. where's the list of mechs_ :)

Edit: Horizontally & on top of the screen (obviously beneath the menu/buttons) would be a proper option.

Thanks for the feedback.  Some people wanted a larger mech list, so I decided to mock that up.  It would replace the information on the right side of the screen when you click the tab on the top.  As would the other tabs.

I think it's really going in the right way !

about the mech list i suggest to show-up somewhere the mech icons so it will help them identifying / being confortable with
them in  the garage and when in-game as well.

edit : also i would preffer the Ability tab at the left (since it's an informative tab) , and put the internal tab instead, i miss the weapons, items, internals thumbnails too. :P

How about giving the internals the same edge glow effect as a selected weapon, but superimpose them over the mech so they appear to be inside its chassis_ Would require 3d models for all the internals though.

As always, thanks for the feedback.  I have added the mech icons to the select panel and moved the ability to the left side. There is now an info panel when you hover over a mech in the select screen.  It just shows the ability and default load out.  It's purpose is to give a very basic impression of what the mech is like.  However, when you click on a mech, the full customization screen opens, allowing you to see the default items, counter-measures, all of the weapon options, and it's juicy lore.
