as a chronic low level tier player (i tend to die a lot--btw if it's a 3v3/2v2 match where someone drops out, i've gotten a twenty-something kill score. 37 could be possible, but 0 deaths and miraculously quick intercepts. noobs tend to rocket boost a lot which lights 'em up on radar) i frequently encounter kb-smack. the best policy is ignoring it. if you got time, or your score is so bad you don't care, take the effort to be icky-creepy nice to them. they go ballistic, and while they're typing they're not playing. a stationary/typing player is a dead target.
then the smack becomes oriented around your mech/class being OP and what's a lvl 30 player doing here the ballancing is hosed blah blah blah. i got attacked by 3 russians, apparently chat-linked, in DM. i devastatingly slaughtered them, and in the process of SSing the chat box learned some new russian cuss words. mostly alluding to my being a 6-foot tall sex organ, or non-heterosexual behavior, amongst other porno-discriptors.

oops forgot#: what vallyria said. click the link below, or go to the clan forums. talk to members of guilds and clans, ask to game with them as a guest player, when comfy with one group join up (caveat: some have a no-holds-barred profanity permitted policy).

but seriously, i never loook at chat and when i do its when im in seige and somebody is spamming the chat. the person is usually raging and i try to calm them down. Also the only racial slurs i saw were for callsigns and that person got stomped in that match. I think it was tdm and i got like 37 kills and 5 deaths.

Isn't tdm played for 10min or whichever team gets to 40kills first_ 37kills seems a bit steep of a statement

I got really mad. When mad or happy(don't ask it's really weird) I play better. It happens in everything I do. I had to stop my self from saying something even more offensive to that player.

Unfortunately there will always be those individuals who are less than fun to play with. Now, I'm not making a personal judgement about your son as I don't know him very well, but younger gamers will generally have a less than pleasant experience playing these kind of games. Mainly because we men tend to get frustrated very easily at that younger age. Not to say that the actions of others are excusable. I usually do my best to keep things pleasant and light hearted in any game that I'm in, but not everyone feels that need to do so. A lot of the Trash-Talk does tend to come from the newer player base where the frustration level is much higher. I know when I'm usually playing with a lot of the other vetteran players, we're all pretty chill and just having fun with each other. Oh well, sorry to hear that your son's experience with Hawken was less than positive.
