Yeah, the SOA anime is excellent. And it's actually a very faithful adaptation of the light novels. They've got another dozen episodes to close out the main ALO arc now, with plenty of content left over for another season.

Simple VR is not that far off... we already have many examples of it today. I wouldn't be surprised to see games designed for haptic suits and VR helmets before the end of the decade.

Unravelling the operation of discrete brain components and sensorimotor neural interfaces is proceeding at a rapid pace. We already have prototypes for very rudimentary bionic eyes, for instance. Being able to simulate a complete human brain in software should be technically feasible soon after the advent of exascale supercomputing... 2020ish_ From there, brain interface R&D would mainly be a matter of money, and the fields of neural prosthetics and AI should explode. Virtual environment technology will grow almost as a side  effect of that development. That sort of power probably wouldn't be commoditized until at least 2040 or so, however.

It's a little harder to speculate about the evolution of imaging technology and whatever non-invasive methods that could able to transmit such high bandwidth information directly into the brain from a helmet. That's magical Sufficiently Advanced Technology. An implant based system would be much easier to pull off, or at least easier to conceptualize with our current theoretical understanding.

Certainly, 2022 (SOA launch date in that universe) is much too early.

Mmmm, well I have a love for cats, and black is pretty badass. Not to mention I like 96neko, an utaite with a delicious voice. And clan sorta fit. Words like Legion, Brigade, or Division might make good substitutes.

Then you'll like the third arc should they ever get around to it(judging by the episodes left I doubt it).
