Let me provide a meme I made.

Also I would rather play a combo of both SAO and ALO. The level system from SAO i dont like But I liked the complexity of the different skills and the world itself more than the ALO but I liked the Flying and no levels and just personal skill based gameplay. So a combo of the 2 in one game would be what i want.

If you want to watch good anime you have to go back to the 80s.

The 1980s was only when anime started getting good again, though that doesn't compare to how bad it is now.

I really do try to enjoy all anime but it's so hard these days. (I did enjoy me some Steins;Gate.) In the 70s and 80s the standards were not completely set in stone yet, everything was so different, fresh, and to me way more enthralling. Now anime is just linear, predictable, and there is no argument that can say otherwise.

Works like Yoshiyuki Tomino's and Leiji Matsumoto's in the 70s will always hold dear to my heart. I do not see anime as good as Galaxy Express 999 ever being written again. I am brought to manly tears watching Aura Battler Dunbine, Captain Harlock, Battleship Yamato, and Invincible Superman Zambot 3. I put UC Gundam 1978-1988 above all else though and I watch each one annually.

Achem,
I would like to complain about the turn this anime has taken...a turn, I believe, is for the worst. I just don't see the point of the Alfheim whatever ma doohicky arc. I really liked the way they spiced it up and through twists in the plot every week in SOA, but this new Alfheim shizzit is so predictable. I'm not sure why, but I find it very uninteresting. I eagerly await your criticism and rejection.

Have you tried The Tatami Galaxy_ That fits all 3 of those statements.

I've only been out of the battle shounen (Naruto, One Piece, etc.) phase since 2006 and I've been following anime seasonally for a few years, yet there's usually 1-2 exceptional series every year. I'm pretty sure there's a taste difference (I like most of Shaft's works from '06 onwards) but just don't strap your nostalgia glasses on too tight. IMO Anime is still doing great, you just have to look a bit harder.

It's funny that you posted in this thread, because SAO is just the new megapopular anime. Just like the new hit song on the radio, you can't base all music on what songs have the most views on Youtube.

Also, we have a general anime topic for a reason.

I was a CR subscriber for at least 2 1/2 years, before I started using BakaBT, and had the time to indiscriminately watch every anime they were adding and each weekly release. Maybe I have pushed myself to a point where the repeating plot patterns have become to easily noticable and get to me more than they should. Maybe better anime should be written more often idk xD.

Is SAO really just .Hack modernized with the typical plot patterns for the new kiddies_ I'd like to think new anime is made for the new generation, so new anime just being reworks of older anime makes sense and that's how it naturally was going to turn out.

Don't think I'm just putting the garbage label on certain anime because it's new. Anime gold is just far more harder to find than it feels it used to be. I'd like at least that point to be understood. :/

That happens with every industry though. Music, movies, art, tv, all that stuff. It just keeps getting recycled. It's kinda the way stuff works lol. They say you can trace pretty much every story that has been told in the recent centuries back to Shakespeare. It all just keeps getting reworked and reworded and more modernized depending on the time. They stamp Romeo and Juliet with a new name and make millions off it every week.

Oh god I hope not. At least there was more at stake in .Hack// than "If you die you die in real life". General consensus is no.

I don't trust CR. For every season I just search up "<current year> <current season> anime chart" in google images (ex. "2013 winter anime chart") and pick from there. Then find my subs elsewhere. Looking at the list though, CR does have some really good series from the past few years.

I find anime more iterative, where new anime is like old anime, but with a small enough twist to keep it fresh, and then just keep going from there. Of course you'll find patterns and may even find it repetitive at an enthusiast level of watching, but you'll also find series that put a good spin on an idea.

After that voice actor dying 4 years back and the CR community horridly mocking her fundraiser I could never go back without being disgusted. I let that bug me back then for some reason to the point of cancelling my sub.

I'll definitely be looking at these release charts more often though. When being released I enjoyed Heroman, Steins;Gate, Nurarihyon, and Reborn so I know gems are out there but I'm rarely willing to look through the overwhelming list. That is a pretty good tool I've never thought to Google, thanks. Totally out of the loop now though.

I don't know much about your taste, but I really enjoyed Fall 2010 and was following about 6 series then. So it might be a good place to start.
