My earliest memory of what started my Mechaphilia :P came courtesy of the 1990 film "Robot Jox", I was only 8 when I watched it but I can remember it like it was yesterday :D Which in turned sparked my curiosity to play the original Mech Warrior. Following that was, the Robotech and Macross series.

"Robot Jox is a 1990 post-apocalypticscience fiction film directed by Stuart Gordon and starring Gary Graham, Anne-Marie Johnson, and Paul Koslo. The film was co-written by science fiction author Joe Haldeman.
The film's plot follows Achilles, one of the Robot Jox who pilot giant mechanical machines that fight international battles in a post-nuclear world. After Achilles' final contracted battle against his primary rival, Alexander, ends in an inconclusive disaster, he retires from the field, only to return again when he realizes that a female genetically engineered athlete, Athena, will replace him. Athena attempts to steal the robot and fight against Alexander anyway, and when she is easily defeated, Achilles reclaims his robot to fight. After a prolonged battle, Achilles and Alexander reconcile and salute each other.

During the writing process, director Gordon clashed with Haldeman frequently over the film's tone and intended audience. Filmed in 1988, the film was not released until 1990 when the studio went bankrupt during production. It earned $1,272,977 in domestic gross, failing to earn its production cost in theaters. The film received negative critical response and little audience response upon its first theatrical run, but has attracted a minor cult following and influenced elements of popular culture since its initial release."

Here is the full movie on youtube if anyone would like to check it out :)

Well, my first exposure to mechs was with Mechwarrior 2.. which I played when I was about 5 on a Windows 95 PC (I can't even imagine that now xD) Eventually I came to know a lot about the Battletech universe, and got into Mechwarrior 4, MechCommander, and MechAssault for the Xbox. Here and there, I played other robot games, like Armored Core, some other old playstation games that I can't remember the names of. Another favorite of mine [and this game STILL works on WIndows 7] was Total Annihilation.

I caught as much as I could of the Gundam series when it was on Toonami, though I missed most of the well-talked-about Gundam Wing. IGPX was a fave of mine as well.

There was a lot of cheesier anime related to mechs that I didn't get into... but the most recent story involving mechs [though it's not really about them and calls them "landmates"] that I was exposed to was Appleseed. <excellent story, excellent movie.

EDIT: COMPLETELY forgot Transformers! lol

Yoshiyuki Tomino's works in the late 70s and 80s. The best writer/director of all time.

I can't pinpoint when or where it started because I was drawing mechs when I was a little kid. Back then, I used the lineart on MAHQ as a reference point.

The MechWarrior series. When I was a kid, around six, my parents vacationed to Washington State to spend time with some friends of theirs. The father of the family happened to work for Microsoft. I was able to get a few games for free, and I happened to get MechWarrior 4 with an expansion and a MechWarrior RTS. I instantly fell in love with giant machines kicking the fuzzy bunny out of each other.

Robots are cool. Guns on robots are even better. Missiles on robots are FTW. I drive a robot and shoot those things in this game_ Oh yeah, this is awesome.

Have just always enjoyed electronics. I played my R.O.B on the Nintendo, that's the first robotic thing I messed with even though it was messy to try and control.

Had no idea Joe Haldeman co-wrote RJ!
The Forever War is one of my favourite-ever books.

OT: I think my earliest memory of big robots was possibly Voltron, the original Transformers series was also an influence, as was ED-209 from RoboCop, then I stumbled across the Battletech game, got Mech Commander for PC, it went downhill from there ;)
