All my axes were still there.

 

I was feeling frisky, and decided to come back to that spot - right there under the south trentik overpass, to the left of the pillar.  Sure, there was some giga over the hatch, nothin some vamp mode nanos from a mini-helix couldn't take care of. It even ate through the lock for me. I was always bad with codewords.

 

There they were - some with enough "experience" for several pilots' lifetimes, some with barely a scratch.  My favorite, the L5. So many months getting that piston chassis hermetically sealed to hold up as well as that boot that was on there to begin with, just so I had that full cloak.  Getting a pair of moke lowers to hold it up was no easy feat either, if you'll pardon the pun.  That infil has both saved my hide, as well as making it too easy to remove the hides of other pilots. heh, I remember the day I stole that one.  Ran right up to that skrub and threw an EMP at'em with mine own bare hands.  Those SOBs are fekkin heavy.  Then there was frankendank.  So many other pilots shake their heads at that loadout, but nothin makes me smile more than that farthammer-on-steroids brass. moves like a bloody hippo with a gland problem, but it'll drop'em all like a buncha bad habits.  one of my buddies said "it's built like steakhouse, but handles like a bistro." whatever that means. even the standard issue CR-T, and later, the Brommens, which I inherited from a "starwars fan". he named it after "the fighter that killed the deathstar" or some such nonsense. I kept it for lack of a better handle.

 

I had given it all up.  Left the resistance in shambles - it was already in shambles, and all I was doing was patching together freedom fighter crews from half-decent mechanics and more than a fair share of beggars.  I had stopped going out on sorties,  and had been reduced to trying to keep all these would-be pilots from dying within the first 10 seconds of combat, and those with a single shred of combat experience from swaggering themselves into an early grave.  There were a lot of lives given to the cause. almost all of them did so because I gave the order. In the end, the megacorps won, and I was broken. I was no longer a leader of a resistance, but a herald of death to those who no longer had anything to lose but their lives.  All of this coupled with the fact that I no longer had the time or inclination of being in an axe beside them in the firefight.  I no longer considered myself a pilot. and that was painful.

 

I had finally worked past the pain of separating myself from the group, and felt that I could return to the cockpit and actually start earning a living.  After meeting back up with some of the seasoned militiamen, found out that they were still running contracts for the corps, cherrypicking the ones that would either have a positive effect on the slums, or none at all.  When I first saw them, they had nothing but smiles on their faces.  hell, they even seemed excited to drop into combat with me.

 

So we made our way down to the conscription point, renewed our dropship passes, and immediately rotated in and started putting ordinance down range.  Just like riding a bike.  funny thing - so many new callsigns,  so many new skulls. even had some corporate butterbars hollering protips over the comms.  jeez, I was piloting axes while these gits' mums were still braining pilots outside of the PX for 2 scrips a go.  just shook my head when the TOWS punched holes right thru the one side they weren't paying attention to. Hell, I rated faster this go around, now that I wasn't trying to save my city from the greed of the corps.

 

I put them back, just the way I always did.  Every one of them right where they should be.  I walked away, realizing that not once during this little run, not once did I even step foot in uptown during combat.  And the city was the same old dumpster as it was.  Business as usual.

 

Maybe I'll head down to the rally point on tuesday or thursday, get some target practice in, maybe even pick up a contract and make some fekkin money. Who knows...

To be fair, "defence" is the way British people spell it, iirc.
I tend to use either, seemingly at random.
