It's time to see actual ping data by location for the various server locations.  This is something we built out because it's raw data and it can help identify what's *really* going on.  You'll notice some trends with worldwide internet peering, and you'll see why we would love to have servers in fairly central locations.

In my opinion this data emphasize the need to remove the artificial region bucketing and instead have the matchmaker consider actual client-gameserver ping time; and at the same time get a wide variety of datacenter locations.

I'm the little green dot in the bottom of France, sadly it doesn't translate into a good experience, the gains made last week in terms of hit registration and overall stability are gone even though the ping is lower than before.

Other people who had issues around the same time as I did are confirming the trend :(

Come on Crafty, you have been officially called out on your lies. Your online reputation is at stake here, this is just like an old school street race running for pink slips. Its run what you brung and hope its enough. Put up or shut the fuzzy bunny up.

It's funny that the player base is such that you can practically identify dots by name on some of these maps.

What was the duration of the data collected?

Pubstomping is a whole different strategic discussion, however, and usually just becomes an exploration of the ethics of dumpstering randos.

This data probably came from that survey we did a month ago or so. It's real data apparently.

Interesting how the EU maps show a very even spread of locations, while the NA ones seem to only show relatively major city hubs.  Merl's from Kodiak but his location is shown in Anchorage.  Wonder if this is due to the different internet infrastructure between EU and NA or some other factor?

Well that would make this data much less meaningful, hope that's not the case...

This is actual ping data over the last few days.  It's totally separate from any survey responses.

I think its interesting that the "best" US severs for average ping is Chicago and Dallas, though i haven't had any of the odd lag issues anywhere but Atlanta and Newark, i wonder if the number of players running in certain server has to do with the lag with low ping people are having.

We mean that we can see our towns/cities. For example, I see one tiny ping that I'm positive is me.

Not sure it's that accurate... I mean... even if there's a dot you have to be able to zoom in really close up to "street" level to be sure there's only one dot and not 6 in the city...

Why, assuming you have enough information to reasonably speculate, does latency to some server locations rise much more quickly with increasing distance than it does with others?

Here's the Dallas map with flight distances to a variety of cities that a lot of players are connecting from or around:

A7acq4I.png

and here's the LA one:

f5J3Uuj.png

Ashburn also has this problem relative to Dallas, but it's much less obvious.

Even the difference in ping between LA-->Dallas and Dallas plus the area near it-->LA connections is massive. Is there any other explanation for all this aside from some servers majorly underperforming or there being an issue with the LA hosting provider's network infrastructure?

Entirely possible that your connection is routed to your ISP in a different (likely major) city, so your IP is associated with the ISP location.

Thanks.  Dallas and Chicago look to be the most consistent and wide-reaching good connections on the whole board.

capnjosh...is there a reason that we can't have a NY server again?

Some ping feedback as viewed from my end (I'm located in NY):

- At it's best I'm pinging about 40 to Ashburn. This used to be in the mid-30's at one point in time months back.

- At best I ping 44 to the NJ servers....which doesn't seem to make any sense compared to the greater distance to Ashburn. The NJ servers seem to be glitchier than the Ashburns as well. This does seem to be reflected on your map.

- I used to ping in the mid to high teens to the old NY servers (15-18 typical)....which was great fun, very smooth, and made scoring much easier.

Are the NY servers more expensive?...or is there some logistical problem that prevents setting up in NY again?

I would have to agree with Compliance.  Newark servers are pretty terrible compared to slightly improving Ashburn, bad hit reg, rubberbanding, lots of teleporting.  I ping lower to Ashburn than to Newark and I live 30 minutes from Newark, compared to the hours to Ashburn.

The NY servers were literally perfect. No issues whatsoever and beautiful, beautiful ping.

New York servers are possible.  It's pricing, really.  I'll put in a request to see what might be possible.

Just found out about the forums reset....

I played during the public Beta and a little bit more afterwards, but around the time of the "Great Silence" i stopped playing; now i got back and its nice to know theres a South American server (i am from Peru), sadly its in Brazil, the reason obviously is that they have a great number of players, but servers in Br only benefit Brazilians, for the rest of South America, we get similar pings to the ones we have in USA servers.

As recommendation i have always heard that Chilean and Argentinian servers give good pings to most countries of South America, i wonder if its possible to add a server in one of those countries. And if you can, on Peru too of course.

Much appreciated capnjosh. I know I won't be the only one to celebrate and offer sacrifice to the Hawken gods should the NY servers reappear!
