I'd find it in bad taste if it was posted in direct response to the dev's death. Since it wasn't, I don't think anyone should feel compelled to edit their posts because of an unfortunate coincidence.

 

Also, I think it was written somewhere that you have to say that Hawken is dead or dying before you're considered a true community member, so you can't fault them there.

No one is stalking them. Some people were trying to find the name and address of the funeral home se we as fans could show our respect for him. The only way to do that was for someone to contact a family member on facebook as we have no other method of doing so. Jay loved what he did. He loved working on Hawken. We as his fans are trying to show our final respect for someone who helped make a game many of us love. To accuse of us stalking is rude. If you have the address of the funeral as I would assume you do, then please give it to one of us so that we can try to put a fund together to send flowers to the funeral parlor where his funeral is being held at. So his family can see that his fans did appreciate what he did. I believe his family would be greatful for a  kind act of caring by his fans, to honor his legacy with Hawken, with us, his fans.

You're stalking them by looking them up. It's a nice touch but unnecessary and invasive to the family and friends of the deceased. I think it's incredibly unclassy, creepy, and inappropriate to post public domain links of family and friends Facebooks. So no, intention might be pure, but would like you to back off seriously. Tiggs isn't going to hand out personal information relating to this deceased to unknown people.

If you're really adamant about flowers, why don't we just petition someone we already have contact with and knows this guy to send a message of condolences from the community, like I don't know, someone this guy worked with?

Oh, we know a few people already! Like Tiggs and Josh! Instead of jumping straight to the family who at this point probably don't want Facebook messages from complete and total strangers at this moment.  What you've done is inappropriate and potentially invasive toward the living family members of the deceased.  Your result is well intended, but the means in which you try to achieve it is not.

WTF is wrong with you people? I would LOVE someone I worked with to send flowers to my funeral. I would love people I had put my lifes work into to send me flowers. Thing is, Nov8tr, you haven't worked with him. You don't know him personally. You hav never interacted with him on a personal level. You don't know him, you literally just read about him. So all those things you mentioned about what you would like to happen isn't necessarily what the family would like. What you want isn't what they want. How the hell do you know what his family wants? today we learned a difference in community attitudes towards death, on one hand we have ppl who like increased rememberance and affection from strangers/fans, and on the other we have the rest in peace angle

 

i say in this case rest in peace is definitely the way to go since its clear that condolences are welcome but so long as they are kept in respectful indirect ways. Not showing up at funerals with flowers or other fans. Those are usually by request anyways.

He's not my neighbor. He's not my friend. Neither is his mother, his best friend, his brother's wife. I don't know them. He's a man who worked on a game that I play, and it's sad that he passed, but how can you claim personal connection simply through a game he worked on and never had a single personal interaction with? Invasion of privacy during a sensitive time is something you're doing.

We're not saying you don't give a rats ass. We all care in different ways. If the family wanted all their information out to everyone while they're grieving they would have posted it publicly or asked us to. They didn't so we're giving them their privacy and you should do so too.

Seems Nov's intentions were well meaning, though I think he might have gone a bit differently about it. Maybe since this person was an employee of Reloaded and I'm assuming worked in  some direct fashion with Josh and Tiggs and other members of their team, it might have been better to ask thru Reloaded to convey any condolences or possibly  take up some type of collection for the families if one desired to do so if Reloaded was in any kind of contact with the families and willing to do this.  

None of us knew him personally so I think an influx of strangers expressing sorrow, though maybe well intentioned,  might be a bit unwelcome in their time of grief.

I personally tend to stay away from getting involved with people or families directly that such tragedies befall...since I don't know them and they don't know me. Reloaded knows them and I think asking them to communicate the Hawken communities condolences  may be the best avenue for anyone wanting to express their feelings in this matter.

Let me tell you about Mary Lynn.

 

She was beautiful as a child.  She was bright and sunny, with always a good word for me.

 

She was my administrative assistant. 

 

For the last two years, she was dealing with her husband's issues (complications after heart surgery) and her mom's lack of mobility (nursing home).  No one noticed Mary Lynn's occaisonal lapse of attention to detail.

 

Four weeks ago, on the 2nd of May, Mary Lynn came in a little later than usual, looking very tired.  I had a business trip to another country scheduled, and she'd kinda messed up the itinerary and ticket, I was going to ask her to fix it.  Instead, I asked her, "Mary Lynn, are you all right?"

 

"Why wouldn't I be?" she asked.  A few minutes later, ticket straightened out, her last words to me were "Hey, Dave, you're looking really good," referring to my weightloss.  That's Mary Lynn, kind words for people.

 

She needed assistance out of the office that day, she was to go see a doctor about something; unclear if it were related.

 

She was admitted to the big hospital that night, and testing began.  Saturday morning, her husband called us at work and said it's terminal stage-IV brain cancer, she's got days to live.

 

She passed away the next Friday.

 

We did not go to a funeral.  We did go to a gathering at a funeral home, and signed the book, and shook her husband's hand and smiled sadly at the slideshow where Mary Lynn was beautiful as a child.

 

The family asked us to go our way after that.  She'd worked for this company for 30 years.  We were respectful and honored their wishes.

 

This was a little cathartic to type.  Nov8r, the point is, even if a person were a colleague for a long time, and you knew her REALLY well, you honor the family's wishes, and don't intrude.

 

I'll miss Mary Lynn, and I'll remember her last words to me.

As For Nov's Intentions, they WERE good and well placed.... I actually took the time to compose a rather long message, sent it through to Jay's Sister explaining how though I did not KNOW the man personally I was very sorry for their loss, that I personally believed that Jay was responsible for making alot of people happy with his work, its called sympathy and if you meet a stranger in the street and they say " i lost someone" you would do the same, correct we may not have KNOWN him personally, but I'd rather have his family think that they were not the only ones grieving the loss than nobody giving to flying fuzzy bunnys etc etc, Something that as Nov states, was COMMON to do, it is Called Compassion, Many of you should go to your local law office and change your name to apathy because you daf about fuzzy bunny but your own opinions...

come on people, i was in a similar situation just a few months ago. a very close friend's older brother died very suddenly. i was close to the family and even i felt like a stranger at the time. just leave the poor people alone. the last thing they need right now is a bunch of weirdos from the internet contacting them ffs. lets be a little rational here.  you may have good intentions but for 80% the population of this country this type of behavior is unacceptable and makes people uncomfortable. it is not your place to get involved unless asked too.
