Gundams are cool and all but the choice of colors is absolutely horrendous.

I personally loved the Gundam style of mechs but I prefare the more realistic Matrix style for a game. Hawken hit the nail on the head for me!

Voted for SW walkers. Allways loved them, expecially small recon-trooper meches. Like on the pic:

Of the Japanese mechs,  I think Xenogears and Full Metal Panic had the best designs. The one above was actually one of the villains from Xenogears. Full Metal Panic went with a more "military" style, with slightly more practical designs (but still leaning heavily on the Rule of Cool).

Typically they don't use melee weapons except as a last resort and utilize modular artillery weapons as guns, so that they can switch armament on the fly.

I much prefer realistic, if not slightly futuristic military mechs. Something that has a degree of plausibility to it and isn't doing  backflips or roundhouse kicks. When I think of a mech I pretty much picture what you would imagine if someone were to redesign an Apache helicopter and give it legs. Humanoid mechs tend to annoy me, especially if they bristle with outlandish armaments or carry oversized swords and rifles. If you're not going to integrate modular weapon systems into what is essentially a walking tank then what's the point. To me the ideal mech is relatively compact (10-40 ft tall) and designed with a particular role in mind like most combat vehicles.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Metal Gear series yet.

But the idea of those oversized rifles, which would realistically be firing artillery sized shells, is that they basically are modular weaponry. They're the most modular you can get - Pick up, fire until empty (Or, if you have ammo linked into the chassis of the mech, until the situation changes), drop. If you do an airdrop of gun emplacements you could even provide additional types of weapons for if the situation alters tactically.

I prefer either the Tau XV suits, Space Marine Dreadnoughts or the Imperial Titans, plus other mechs from other games and movies.

I'm really shocked that no one mentioned the Veritech Fighter or the Veritech Hovertank from Robotech...

I also prefer the Battletech/Robotech style over the Gundam stuff... Gundam has too many issues with physics (worse than even Robotech) for me to enjoy.

Four legged and spider styles would be great for heavy mechs as well.

Walkers would be awesome for very-very heavy mechs... maybe in the future though. :D

I think that "gundam" has become, for a lot of the anti-gundam dudes here, pretty synonymous with any japanese style of Mech.

(CLASSIC) Front Mission style mechs, specifically the Polish ones, are as sleek as it can get while remaining realistic.

Sadly, no one on Google has a screenshot of it.. maybe if i hook up my PS2..
