Nice process ! if you want  to make it a bit more punchy i suggest you to add a little glow arround the rendered planet and maybe some stars in the background, i don't know if it's possible/hard to do  in the software you  use, but it would be cool =)

Did you get the comics previews _ they are free

Thanks for that Erathic, unfortunately I was unable to open it. I'll do a bit more work on it, adding the cities, glow and stars.

If you look at pictures of anything with an atmosphere it will have a glowing transparent  hue of color around the planet.

It's ok, I know about the atmosphere glow. I didn't use it in my first animation to cut down on the rendering time, but the next one I do will have it, plus stars.

I actually would omit stars. If you see the pictures from orbit and such, you can not actually see any stars

If you want to keep a fast render maybe you can add theses effects in your animation software directly instead of re-rendering the whole thing, via a separate non-animated layer, wich will contain your glow effect, and background_ it could do the trick.

I would say that it would be more likely that the cities would spread out from single points in a radial fashion because you would be less likely to be dependent on rivers and lakes as a primary water source. Cities on earth were mostly dictated by obvious above ground water.

TL;DR
Would more likely see circular cities.

Also the large cut in between the right and center land mass is highly geologically unlikely. Also Illal is the first terraformed planet. So we don't know what state the planet was when they found it, Just for thought though.

According to lore, you can get just about anywhere by train as well.

I actually started out doing the cities in a circular patten but I thought it looked a bit to much like Star Wars, so I changed them. I can try doing two versions. Also, this thing about the trains, bridges or tunnels_

Thanks Pastorius, I'm glad you like it and thanks very much for the link as well. Thanks also to Odin and the others who gave me feed back. I was doing this practically blind. I had very little info when I started.

I will animate it like the other one, but first I want to make a specular map so the lights show up on the night part. I can't promise to put an atmosphere glow around the animated one though, because it slows down the rendering time a lot. Also the glow may act a bit odd when it's converted to a GIF.

I would get rid of the atmosphere or what ever it is. Anything of that sort would be very toxic/block out sun light and render the planet uninhabitable. Just keep a nice clean simple image. Also I would recommend keeping the flattened one around too
