So I was wondering what you guys prefer while playing.
Do you think the in-game music is good enough or do you play your own music from a desktop application while muting the in-game one.
Or do you think that no music is the best since it increases situational awareness (things like hearing people go into repair, activating ability, walking, boosting etc.)

I despise having music playing when I'm gaming. In game, it's fine and I think Hawken does a good job of it, actually. Heightens the tension at the end of the match.

Any other music, especially with how pants-on-head the Windows Mixer is these days, is just a distraction and one more thing to worry about.

I think it only makes sense for streamers, who need to keep their viewers aurally engaged.

Please take the high road guys. Don't go for that low-hanging fruit.

Good point about streamers using music, that's one thing I always notice in their vids.

No music for me.  Being able to hear the sound of a heat cannon charging or an enemy mech walking around has helped me too many times.

(I don't mean to necro threads, I'm just almost always running behind.  My apologies)

I sometimes listen to music when I'm playing, though when I do so I turn it down so low that I can pretty much only hear it when the game swaps to the carousel.

Yeah, but dude, we are at 1750. As much as we would like to be Professional Yolodrivers like you [Meraple] and Lightangel112, we're not there yet. It's something to aspire to, sure, but there's a lot of ground to cover.

Sometimes you just gotta feel the flow of the game. I do that by listening to music in pub games.

Here is an example of A-class flow:

Being in the zone trumps situational awareness for me.  Blast tunes with a groooove.

Depends: if it's a usual pub game then a little bit of personal music won't hurt. In a serious match i prefer silence however.

No music. The best tool you have for "seeing through" walls is your own Sonar. I have a theatre-surround sound Dolby system hooked up, and have it slighly lower than window-glass cracking level. I concur with that HEAT cannon charge-up, the breecher cycling, as well as flat footed fatties tromping around. better than radar.

Firstly (just in case you didn't know I named myself after Jaco Pastorius) I am a musician and very interested in music for the gaming industry. The HAWKEN soundtrack is awesome and I do own it and play it often. Paper Sound did a fantastic job. Also, [HWK]Shadiraidio is an awesome SD. So, HAWKEN is all good audio wise for so many reasons.

However, I have a 7.1 Logitech headset and the situational awareness benefit is huge. So, I turn the in-game music off and have the SFX just below my TS volume because you simply cannot beat good communication and team-play in HAWKEN.

I guess when I'm driving through London I don't want the radio distracting me either_ So, when I'm in a game like HAWKEN I don't need that extra thing going on too...

So TLDR, Love the soundtrack but turn it off. :D

(As a musician, I'm ashamed I even wrote that!)

When I was young and playing Daytona in the local arcade, the music was everything to the game. In HAWKEN its about making kills and thinking fast.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Yeah, I myself have played better without music on so I just use the default in game one which plays only at the end of matches. Although, playing some drum n bass or serious dubstep once in a while also helps cos then i kill with the beats. :)

Okay I love the Armored Core series and I tend to play there music when I'm playing this game and other mech games. I don't know why but there is something about Armored Core's music that just fits mech games so well.  Heres an example of what I mean, just try this song out in a match.

Armoured Core stuff is great; I describe Hawken as Armoured Core meets Mechwarrior, slapped onto UT mechanics.
