On the topic of Night Combat, I would like to suggest a twist:

Since this game is based around the battle for resources, I would love to see a map or two dedicated to space (e.g. - lunar surface, near-Earth astroid, Mars, etc).  The lunar surface, specifically, would be awesome; as the lighting, terrain, and particle effects would take advantage of all that Hawken has to offer.  Certain areas would be blindingly bright, due to the reflection from the surface, while other areas would be quite dark (inside of the craters), allowing for ambush tactics.

Here at my end, what I'd suggest would not be pure night maps but dark maps. I'd also like... hey, I mean... I'd love to have several lighting solutions into these dark scenarios to increase both immersion and eye-candy factors.

For example, playing with upper light sources up there ( if any..) and dynamic clouds (sky's alpha map/s to create certain opacities.., if any again..) to randomly have different sections of the scenerario more or less dark... you know, during dawns or twilights.

That would be awesome, IMHO.

You could have lamps, other kind of lights and even NV ( which I do not like, BTW..) into this scheme. Although I do not know on whether this would be as easy to implement as it sounds at first glance or not. Have a look at my sig...

Additionally, I would not be so convinced on whether a day-and-night cycle ( overdrive and a là Far Cry 2 ) would be good idea in Hawken...

arctic map: somewhere on the coast has mountains nearby blizzard, lightning, thunder for weather (anytime) (covers tracks)
change of weather would show a starry sky with the northern lights (night)
wind storm (cover tracks)

It depends...
I played BF3 and BF2 at nights and it was too hard to see the enemies. I hope that mech has some kind of the lamps and diods so we can spot hostile. If mechs have lamps and are easy too see at night it;s ok.

Night could look and work really well for this game. All the lights shinning off the terrain for mechanical maps, all the lights on the mechs would bloom, plus the shadows would give way to an extra layer of stealth. All maps should showcase multiple weather, day and night effects that suit the map.

well it shouldn't take up to much time, because it needs to be good normally first. But if you think you can pull it off quickly, and easily.
I'd say: fuzzy bunny yeah. Night time combat has been and always be more intens than usual.

Since you never are entirely sure where the next enemy is. Combine this with some sort of nighttime cloak and you are all set for a pretty intens and exciting (I just fuzzy bunny myself kind of way) round.

Night Combat would be pretty cool. Maybe some Night Vision, or lamps on your mech to see around. I think it would be a great addition to the game and give more variety for playing styles.

Night combat is a must...if you can have matches where teams can do covert strikes under the cover of darkness then hell yea.

I think any environment with limited visibility fog, dust ect. would be pretty cool. But it would also be nice to have tools to compensate for such issues. In the case of night time we would need some sort of NVG system.

I really think it's an awesome idea but as of course has to be well implemented, I don't think the problem is a technical one but more of a image/design, the problem is that you might have to add some feature or other to improve night/fight, but I think that a low tech approach with the fighting being more of stalker type, a playing with lights, as to see, bait, or blind, that would be cool indeed. But I think from what you guys shone this details won't be a problem.

One of the thinks I like more about the approach of this game in game play is the principle of epic battle as even an one on one cane take time, for there are no one kill shots.

If it's easy to implement, I say do it. Maps will probably look very different at night as opposed to in daylight.

Night vision was the entire reason I got into the "Special Forces" expansion pack to Battlefield 2 back in the day.

I think if you were to do Thermal Vision, if it's some of the mega-city environments with all the pillars of smokes venting out, there should be a lot of thermal clutter to play an advantage to playing that particular stage at night. Night vision would be applicable, and should be toggled for when you're in an uncommonly well-lit area.

My mind runs amuck with the possibilities. I really hope night, rain, fog, snow, dust-storms, overcast, all kinds of environmental changes should be included, even if it's for a patch at a later date.

I think it would be an interesting idea. I would play it if they implemented it, the thoughts of a giant robot stomping through the unlit city streets being silently stalked sounds awesome.

This game NEEDS Night Combat. Would be pretty kickass. Not just making the map dark though, maybe making the map bigger and less chaotic, give it a small tactical stealth element to it too.

Yeah I think night would be one of the best and hardest things you can think of. If there is going to be night let there be on the settings say gamma. So we can change the brightness in the game. Example: minecraft on the Xbox 360 is very dark when it is night. So we plause the game and turn up the gamma so the screen on your monitor or tv gets brighter but not to bright to hurt your eyes.
Hey everybody minecraft rocks!

Loving this idea, so that Hawken isn't mechaCoD.

Mechs putting out heat when firing/moving, making them glow in IR more (maybe allow for slow movement so maps don't turn into a campfest).

Flares to aid visual targetting (or blind IR viewers).

Maybe an addon that dampens EM signature or whatever so people can't rely on HUD locks from long-distance_
