The first mecha game I extensively played for being a mecha game was Mechwarrior 3. I've played lots of Cyber Knight too (as well as some Front Mission), but it wasn't for the mecha specifically. Then I've played Super Robot Wars OG which got me into eastern themed machines, and since then I'll play absolutely anything mecha, from Titans of Steel to Another Century's Episode.

Except for Armored Core. Can't stand the controls and clusterbunny UI (ESPECIALLY the guesswork involved in telling one random letternumber part from another, worst customization interface ever).

My childhood was very influenced by Robotech, Mechwarrior 2, battletech, and Transformers. Always loved Robots.

Bubblegum Crisis and Gall Force. I still love them to this day.

But it was the gloriousness of the super robot manga/Japanese comics, Getter Robo and Mazinger Z, what made me into a true fan.

I always liked the AT-ST's from Star Wars, but what REALLY got me was Mechwarrior 3. I think I got my hands on that when I was 7 or 8 years old. Since then, I've always had a thing for dirty, tattered and torn walking tanks. The more they look and feel like they're walking piles of bent metal that stomp from one fight to the next, the better.

Never got into the asian mech type. They've always felt tacky to me, swinging around swords and never having a single scratch in their paintjob. But I'm biased in that matter.

Playing the Battletech RPG around 1992 was what originally got me into Mechs.  Started scraping together all the bag-boy money I had to buy all the Battletech guidebooks, schematic books and fiction I could afford.  Would trace and redraw the schematics in my freetime, especially my favorite which was the Rhino. (Note: Below is Not my drawing).

Got into the Macross / Gundam universe after that and once I got to college, got into PC games like Mechwarrior, Heavy Gear and Shogo which competed against my equal love of FPS back then.

Let's not forget them bright blue, white and yellow colors! And those huge samurai swords! And the propensity of psychic teenagers learning to pilot them in a whim!

hehe. ;)

Don't get me wrong: I love mechs from anywhere, but Asian mechs (including the "real robot" ones) aren't something you shouldn't look at when in the search for "realistic" stories/designs.
Ironically, however, that very "unrealism" is also a large part of their charm.

I'm not into mechs, I just like video games, and being used to common FPS's, Hawken's gameplay is great and new to me. Oh yeah, and I also like post-apocalyptic related stuff
