Alright, fine. I drop by for any news about the game and can't resist this topic.
"What would I pay real money for in Hawken?" Nothing.
Call me old-school. Call me a grumpy old fart. But my tolerance for all the microtransactions in games has come to an end - I'm completely sick of it. I think it is ruining gaming.
Why do I think it's ruining gaming?
Well, because of the business end of things. Unless your game is a well established franchise with a strong track record of profitability, you're probably not going to find a single investor or publisher unless you build your game to be "free-to-play" with built in "microtransactions". And that means lots and lots of compromising of artistic vision in lieu of how can we compromise players impulse control centers and stimulate their pituitary and adrenal glands to get them into an addictive state of mind. This model gets used because it is proven to give investors the best returns.
And now, it's even ruining those aforementioned 'established franchises' where publishers like EA are taking an "All of our games will include a microtransaction economy built in, even the ones which we charge a premium price for."
I'm sorry, even though I've been playing video games since 1977 and it's been a beloved part of my life... I may just have to quit at the point where one must constantly sink money into a game just to be able to enjoy it. I've got hundreds of old games that I've been meaning to play again...
So, back to the question, "What would I pay real money for in Hawken?"
I would rather that Hawken just goes straight retail. Set a price for the game and I'll pay it. If you release a sequel or a huge update, I'll buy that too. But I will not pay for access to new maps, access to new mechs, access to new game modes or access to new weapons. And I will never play the game again if it turns towards any evidence of "Pay-To-Win".
If they must keep the 'real money for cosmetics', FINE. I don't care about how my mech looks... but I don't have a problem with players who want to pay for vanity.
