It's better than total kill-count leaderboards..
Barely.
I mean yes, compared to a number that just ticks statically upwards, something that attempts a relative placement will be technically better.
But without getting into a philosophical fight, I'm more and more convinced that all ELO-based algos are worthless. At the very least they are pointlessly arbitrary.

I disagree.
Now of course in Hawken the implementation is hamstrung by the population size, but the idea that these rating systems don't work at least a little bit is absurd.
MMR in Hawken is not inherently flawed in and of itself. Problems with it arise from the systems and expectations surrounding it. The number itself is also fairly irrelevant to the player.

If it's irrelevant to the player why so much talk about it? Just trying to figure it out.
It should be but people are concerned bout how big their e-peen is (as always).

I measure my Hawken e-peen by the grossly inflated accuracy of my T-32 Bolt.

It's supposed to be just what the name says: a matchmaking rating. A measure of how much fight you bring to a match, so that the system can match you with like players, and that you don't dominate less-feisty players.
In practice, it's like Silver says, it's a personal-worth measurement.

While the number itself is irrelevant, the systems surrounding it directly determine what servers you end up on and how those matches are balanced. Knowing the number can give the player a rough idea where they sit but only if they also know the MMR of other players, or at least the average MMR of the server.
In practice the difference between 2097.84096 MMR, 2097 MMR, 2100 MMR, and "fairly high" MMR is insignificant. People tend to get hung up on the 15 sig-figs that are theoretically available.

If the difference between 2100 and 2700 was insignificant then everyone would be 2700. MMR is usually pretty accurate in determining player skill. While the number itself is irrelevant, the systems surrounding it directly determine what servers you end up on and how those matches are balanced. Yes and No,
MMR needs to be separated by game mode family type to do what you claim
Right now , with a single metric, people who track their MMR, gravitate towards TDM only
After a few months of testing on smurf accounts, I'm pretty confident that TDM inflates MMR and Siege and MA deflate MMR relative to each other.

ill just be absolutely blunt and say that mmr matters to people who care about winning and being better than the other player. its that simple. if you say you dont care about mmr or how you stack up against other players then you have a fuzzy bunny mentality. theres nothing inherently wrong with having a fuzzy bunny mentality as long as you keep it to your self but dont make excuses. when i see someone use epeen as an insult all i see is them broadcasting what a fuzzy bunny they are.
lol what wrong with fuzzy bunny? i guess i could say green horn but i dont think that conveys what im trying to say like fuzzy bunny does.

I am happy to play higher skilled players in my region with low ping as I don't mind a challenge, but playing a lobby above my MMR with 300 ping just makes for frustration.
If I connect to games where the MMR is lower than my rating by a similar amount as my ping then i get ok matches ( i can't stomp, but I can actually make kills)
It interesting how in mid tier 100ms latency seems to equate similarly to 100MMR handicap (fresh pilots probably are worse due to learning curve, and High tier cabal less due to mastery of leading and advanced evasive maneuvers)
The bigger issue appears when i look at the MMR spread in the lobby and it is 1250-2300.
That is an issue that needs more population to resolve.
