Armored Core.
Another game that had it good was Exteel. Bloody shame the balance was off on a few parts and it's even more of a shame it went for a pay to win marketing scheme... May its soul rest in piece...
Anyway, I'm sure there are elements from those two games that could inspire this game's customisation.

There are those who will compensate piloting skill with mech building skill, some that will cover over their mechs weaknesses with piloting skills. There will obviously also be those that take proven builds and use them as their own, but one thing is for sure, unless there's a set of parts that clearly dominate everything else in its category by a LARGE margin, there will be variety.

Sorry, this had me laughing until it hurt. Are you being sarcastic, or serious_ I can't tell.
EDIT: Also, when did I say one should be able to have two primary/secondary weapons_

Damn straight. The best part about AC was that there was no one uber powerful loadout (there are always some parts or types of mechs that tend to shine, but it's rare to have something completely dominant), and the best players built around their specific strengths. Because of that, the very best players weren't just the best pilots who could take any build off the net, but people who were also great in the garage.
I mean, in AC5, I was the best sniper killer and duelist in my faction not just because I knew how to pilot well, but because I knew my builds from the inside out and knew how to push them the right way. You don't really get that sense of satisfaction from Hawken's bare-bones setup.

I'm just goofing around. It'd be interesting to try that combination out, anyway. The idea of a primary weapon so lacklustre that doubling up on it might almost be balanced is pretty funny.

Mech level really only matters for unlocking stuff. Alternative weapons, items and the occasional internal have bigger impact than the level bonuses.
A scout with a HEAT cannon probably has a big advantage over a level 1 scout with only a mini flak to its name but the majority of the advantage is in the greater experience of the player who got a scout that high. Saying that the mechanical bonuses of those levels don't really matter is perfectly fine. I'd be happy if you didn't get any bonuses at all and instead got a some extra HC every time you gained a level that didn't unlock gear.
That is all true. However, why make people grind through 25 levels in order to get to the gear they want on each and every mech_ At this point it feels bad to play your level 25 mechs because it feels like you are wasting valuable experience points. But then going from a level 25 to a level 1 mech ALSO feels bad because you don't have all the items etc. that you are accustomed to and enjoy using.
While I would like to see a pilot level system for the sake of long term rewards, the most important thing to me is customization. Currently very few of the optimizations actually make a noticeable difference, so everyone who knows that is pigeonholed into them, and everyone who doesn't is disadvantaged. Diversifying your available weapons probably requires grinding A LOT of time with a weapon you don't like.
What I really want to see is ALL equipment available to a chassis to be unlocked at level 1, and by playing with it you can spend points to adapt it to your own play style (high burst with low survive-ability, super tank with dps, whatever.) Basically I think the "mech level" system leads to poor matchmaking, lots of frustration, and unnecessary and minimally rewarding grinding.

As awesome as it would be to have armored core level customization in a game that plays like hawken, it would just take to much effort to make it. Implementing and balancing a completely free reign customization system would take a ton of time, you would have to redo most of the game.
That being said, the skill tree needs to be reworked, there is no point in going in to the offensive tree at all, the damage boost is completely negligible. The defensive tree has a good HP boost and the utility tree has the dodge cool down, these are the only things worth getting. Also none of the internals are very good either. All of the "customization" this game offer does jack all. Nothing lends itself to a different play style besides changing your one gun, or mech entirely.

I also find the lack of mechs an issue- what happened to all the great mechs from the Alpha tests ( the poster boys )_ There used to be a much nicer light assault, and 2 or 3 sniper class mechs, now we have a much more limited selection and it does indeed make the game feel very stale & repetitive ( as does the very limited number of maps ).
More guns, more mechs & more maps- optimisations only making 2-3% difference to various characteristics of each mech is barely worth bothering with either, it needs to be more like 5-10% at least for it to be worth while as a game mechanic.

To pronounce my name correctly, just pretend the 't' isn't there. You can also think of it as "Freno - [sodacan opening sound]"

If it stays like this, I honestly don't see this game staying afloat long even with all the hard work they did put into it. The level up stats you set up are almost completely worthless and the side grades you can unlock are kind of worthless as well. I don't see it being a big problem in terms of balance if they keep each addon being only a side grade or even have a a little bit of a bigger draw back ( like +30% boost and -40% in something else). Weapons can take some tweaking but still do able. Hate to see such hard work they did in this game and skimp on something so important as variety/customization for a MECH GAME.
