I initially wrote this article to a player what was having low framerates {He recommended I put it in a thread}. I had the same problem multiple times and achieved many resoloutions.

I have an I7 unlocked quad core unlocked {= 8 logical cores} with 24 gig ram and 2 560TI's in SLI I should be able to run anything.

It was as frustrating as all hell.

I'll give you a breakdown of how I resolved the various circumstances in which it occurred.
  • Ran out of HDD space before Christmas. Sounds obvious but easily overlooked if you have lots of games on your system. So I had my HDD cloned to a larger one.
  • Had some drivers out of date. Update windows, video drivers, etc.
  • I needed to to a complete un-install/reinstall of Hawken
  • Updated my Antivirus to a newer version
  • Ran a spyware/Malware scan
  • Doublechecked my firewall exceptions for my router and my software.
  • Defragged my HDD.
  • Cold restarted my router to clear it.
  • Had to join friends in my timezone.{West Coast} Joined buddies in East and it was laggy and choppy
  • Turned off resource hogs: 3rd party chat clients like Skype, Mumble, Teamspeak, etc... Killed any open processes and windows to free up ram/paging and CPU memories
  • Hawken Servers bog out too! Sometimes it isn't anything you can do. but after they restarted the servers it ran better. They do stuff serverside {I call it art and upgrades} that can make it choppy or kills my framerates.
  • Avoid choke points with High Physx such as AA silos or intense combat.
  • Check your Grafix card ram. I have 1 gig per card.
  • I also found PHYSX Particles needed to be turned off or on basic. The NVIDIA max particle crashes me. I discovered this issue before the latest patch as I Tweaked Hawken to allow me to test it.
  • Ran in to a POWERSUPPLY problem in my girlfriends tower.{Duelcore 939fx, 1 gig Radeon 5570 grafx card, 4 gig physical MB ram}. It was crapping out and provided too low power for intense Graphic/Physic events, the grafix were laggy and games crashed. Changed the powersupply and all the grafix problems went away! Who would have thought_
Help me help others.

Post your soloutions and methods on how you turned your low FPS around.

You could also try:
- Disabling "Borderless" in video settings
- Tweak the .ini files to turn off some graphic settings that are not visible ingame

I would like to add: DON"T MESS WITH THE INI SETTINGS UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING!

Very helpful info, I'll try a full Hawken reinstall but other than that I've pretty much tried all of your other suggestions.

Here's a link to my support thread.

UPDATE: Reinstalled Hawken, made sure to delete any files I had on my HDD.  Framerates are still as bad as they were.  Just by watching the "stat fps" ingame I was getting an average of around 25.

How to get better FPS:

1.) Go outside during a rainy day.
2.) Dance and sing the "rain song."
3.) Eat a piece of grass.
4.) Get a girlfriend.
5.) If you've gotten this far, you have more than enough time to figure out how to actually get better frames!

Get a decent CPU. Honestly, too many people out there think about graphics and framerates only in terms of GPU raw power.

Well here's a wake up call - you can run 10 Titans if you wish, but if the rest of the system is unable to feed it with data fast enough, you ain't gonna see any improvement. CPU is the critical component here. Trust me, I know first hand.

I went from 20-30 FPS to roughly 100 just by ditching that old dual core and getting an i5-3750k.

Yeah, you're like a legend here in the forums, a legend that everybody loves to hate, or that everybody hates to love, depending on the scenario.

Try disabling your hyperthreading. Seriously. From what I have read and experienced hyperthreading is more of a marketing gimmick than anything with a practical application. It can actually slow down your processing cores as they can get overloaded with these extra pretend hyperthreading lanes. I have done that on my i7-2700k and saw a noticeable improvement in some games that were cpu intensive. Just my humble opinion on the subject, no gamer right now needs an i7 and honestly I should have bought an i5.

My system is an i7 quad core which is equivalent to 8 logical cores when unlocked. I figured I have them I might as well use them.
Hyperthreading is wide open. I used this link {Click this link for you-tube video on how to unlock the parked cores *ATTEMPT AT YOUR OWN RISK*}.
Currently I'm running 2 Geforce 560 TI's in SLI.
If my SLI gets shut off because of an update than I suffer mass framedrop.
Re-activate the SLI bridge and BAM! Frame rate increase!

Give that a try and see what you think.

yep!
go to hawkensystemsettings.cfg
(path in winXP - C:Documents and Settings@user_name@My DocumentsMy GamesHawkenHawkenGameConfig)

change this:
TessellationAdaptivePixelsPerTriangle=16.000000

and this:
Spoiler

my config, conatain many changes. all video settings turnings from "low" - to "extra low" (or "back to 90's style" =3)
Spoiler

if you hawken not worked on you sux PC =D. Hope this helps. (although dead space 3, assassin creed 3, unreal 3, bioshock and other new game working without lags. lol. only hawken crashes)

I have a problem with the video card in Hawken - "ran out video memory" when i play, and game crashes on desktop.

I talked/requested about this problem with a support a few months, but in the end did not found a solution. their answer was - "buy a new PC. Your computer is too weak and does not satisfy Hawken min. requirements".
but I know...that it satisfies...
I found settings in .cfg that are responsible for the resolution of textures, an analogue of "r_picmip 10" in Quake3: arena.
It does not greatly improves performance in fact, about 10-20 FPS, but eliminates many Hawk crashes (maybe only for me but, no crashes on bazaar, losteco, wreckage. no more drop FPS on winterEco.).
Also, i have a UseVsync=True , this limits my FPS to 60-70, but instead - reduces the load from the video card. if you disable vsync, FPS increase.

In addition, you get your own "plasticine Hawken" style =D
