How about a water world with various chains of islands from marine mountain ranges poking up from the sea floor. Kind of some atoles and maybe some island chains like Japan and some Hawaiian islands. But no definable continents. The islands can be large but no larger than a 2 day car ride ( e.g. ~600 miles). If the larger land masses have tall mountains ( above 8000 ft elv.) the leeward side should be a little bit more dryer.  Space elevators and supporting infrastructure should be situated on the equator. Land masses are not necessary to spaceports.
Cities should be centralized around a coast line in a circular fashion similar to Illal. There should be enough land available for a stable agricultural industry. There would be a strong fishing industry, with aquaculture sites anchored 50-100miles of the the coasts of cities. Being illal's closest habitable planetary neighbor, most of illal's food would have come from this planet. This planet has an unusually strong magnetic field resulting in very common aurora.
This planet shall be named Rán, after the Norse water godess who would pull drowning sailors out of the sea. True to the planets name sake, it is home to refugees, poor trying to make a better life, and those where there was just no more room.

This would be perfect for a cinematic trailer.
Or an intro video to the actual game!

At the moment there's so little story/plot in the game, so establishing the setting would be a good start.
Picture an orbital shot of the rotting planet, then zooming in to see two battleships duking it out,
Zooming in further to find mechs blasting each other to bits,
The narrarator describing why this is taking place, what happened to the planet, etc.

Give us motivation! Make it more than a shooter!

The graphic novels are nice and all, but I hope they inject more plot into the game before the big launch

(I totally understand they're focusing on gameplay and support their efforts. Just thinking out loud)

I see SandSpider made the other planetes ... with his approval (an planetes textures ^^) i'd like to make the complete solar system with the ability to zoom on each planet like in Mass effect : solar system , planet viewer
And of course with Erathic's UI which is always awesome!!

Added a little update, now when you do : right click > Go fullscreen, it's real fullscreen

OK, now this is seriously cool and seriously amazing! I'll try and upload higher res images of the other planets tomorrow for you. I actually made the solar system in Universe Sandbox, available on Steam, to get the all the sizes and distances.  Question, would you like textures for the moons as well. Oh, and if anyone knows, does Illal have any moons_
