I'm using Playclaw to achieve the same result.
It is a bit harder to set-up but it has nice features like hotkeys to turn the overlay on and off; and you don't need to join any server; works "offline".

I've asked Umbre if I can post a guide in here.

PS: Mumble overlay didn't work for me. Dunno if it is related to a dual monitor setup. That's why I searched for alternative methods and found that the Playclaw version free to try works just fine . Anyways, I didn't like the idea of logging to a mumble server to use the overlay feature.

There's a public mumble specifically for Hawken users at mumble.learnhawken.com

It hasn't been used regularly for a while, but for all the people here uses this mumble crosshair trick, but doesn't have a normal mumble server to use, this'd be a good place to start and get the community there back up and running.

PlayClaw Overlay Guide:
Well, lets see if I can make this clear for those who are interested in an alternative option for the Mumble Overlay. And sorry my English!

Pros of this alternative:

Spoiler

- Hotkeys to turn ON/OFF the overlay.
- You can control the Opacity.
- You don't need to log in/connect to the Mumble server for a service you may not use.
- A bunch of other features you may like to use (Record in game like Fraps, for example).

Cons:

Spoiler

- "Hard" to set it up (bit harder than mumble, imo).
- The overlay, if active, will affect any software using DirectX (Photoshop, for example), but I think that this happens with Mumble too.
- If your game resolution change in the future, you will have to set it up again (you will understand this during the guide).

Steps:
1.) Download and Install Playclaw (the trial will work just fine, don't worry).

2.) After you installed it, execute Playclaw. A window like this may pop up. Just click "Cancel".


3.) You should see something like this:


4.) Click "Overlays" .
5.) Scroll down until you find "Image"
6.) In the right, check "Enable overlay". If you want, you can check the second option.


7.) Click in Image path and search for the image overlay you want to use.
8.) Now click on "Set appearance" and you should see something like this:


Here you can place the overlay and other stuff, but it is useless for us because it isn't exact and you have to do it manually. But take a look at that red box in the top left corner of the square containing our image overlay. That is the origin or stick point. Keep that it mind. Now, just close that render sample and proceed to the next step (don't close Playclaw).

("Hard" part)
9.) Win 7 users have to find this folder:
C:Users(your user name)AppDataRoamingPlayClaw5profile

Win XP users: I don't remember which folder was, sorry. (And I'm too lazy now to google it).

10) In that path/folder you may find only one file: default.txt
We need to edit it in order to place our overlay just in the center of the screen. Double click and open it.

11) In here, scroll down until you find: image. You should see something like this:



You have to do some easy math to center the overlay, but before that, check that you have:
r_size_x   100
r_size_y   100
r_stick_x   left
r_stick_y   top

r_size_ refers to the size of you image. In my case is 100px.* 100px. If you have a bigger/smaller image, you have to edit it in here.
r_stick_ refers to that red box you saw before in the render sample. The position of the overlay is based on that box or handler.

Now the easy math:
For r_origin_x:
(Hawken resolution width / 2) - (Image overlay width / 2)

For r_origin_y:
(Hawken resolution height / 2) - (Image overlay height / 2)

Example:

Hawken resolution is:
1280 x 720

Image overlay size is:
100 x 100

For r_origin_x:
(1280/2)-(100/2) = 640-50 = 590

For r_origin_y:
(720/2)-(100-2) = 360-50 = 310

In my screenshot you can see that I did an small correction adding 1 pixel to r_origin_x, because it wasn't completely centered in game; maybe because the original image wasn't perfectly centered.

12) After you did those changes, save but don't close the notepad yet.
13) Launch Hawken and check if the overlay is centered. I did it in the training.
14) If all is fine, you can close the notepad and setup the hotkeys for the overlay. If you find issues, go to the error check. And of course, don't close Playclaw

Error check:

1.) If the overlay is anywhere but near the center, you probably did something wrong. Check your Hawken resolution. If you use your desktop resolution (in Playclaw) it won't work.
2.) If it just need an small correction, minimize Hawken and fix it in that config file (default.txt) and save.
3.) Go to Playclaw and click "Set appearance" so the values are refreshed. Close the render sample.
4.) Disable/Enable Overlay.
5.) Go to Hawken and check if it is centered (should be).

Zakiel you are a genius btw, just tested the playclaw thingy and it works like a charm (Testes the modified xacius crosshar and it works well too, just add 1 or 2 pixels on the x axis to compensate for the justification of the image), Loving how I can enable disable the crosshair so far from there. I only had one issue while setting it up (Which most people will have I guess) If you dont find the roaming folder go to your explorer and type %roaming%, it should appear.

They did, but I would venture to say "Custom Crosshair" = A bunch of different crosshairs to choose from that's baked into the game.  I could be wrong.

Most likely right though. Although it would be cool if they gave us the option to upload our own as well as giving us some presets. After all its not like having custom camo that everyone can see. Only you can see your cross-hairs.

Really_ People actually search for certain servers_ I just pick the first one that comes up, mute and deafen myself, and then change my crosshair.

Cross-hair: I'd like a simple fraking dot with 3 states:

1.- State A a.k.a "nothing happens": transparency factor 50%
2.- State B a.k.a "there's something out there": Solid color
3.- State C: Solid color (+contrast or color intensity_) (+blinking as an extra option_)

+ -> The end user picks up the color at will.

BTW, those player health bars are awful.. way too big and unimmersive. The same applies to the ones of the battleships.
Had to say it.. I'm afraid...

I don't see a search bar, but how else would one find this Hawken mumble server_

I am legit asking, not being sarcastic. I couldn't figure out how to find any hawken related server, so I just picked the first server available (no matter what it's called or what game the people inside are playing).
